  1. Report On Forestry Department and Telok Bahang Forest Reserves (Penang)

 

The group was briefed by Dr.Mohd.Yunus Zakaria (Director) at the Telok Bahang Arena and was taken for a tour in the forest area. Among others the Sustainable Management System, Forest Certification and the Malaysian Grading Rules.

 

Situated about 24 Km from Georgetown, it covers of about 32 hectares of forest reserve. Rivers, pools, fish ponds, playing grounds, forest trails and resting places and a forest museum are found here. An arboretum displaying species of plants of exotics values can found at the center.

 

Among facilities found here are camping areas, place for picnicking, swimming, trekking, hanging bridge, Dipterocarpaceae arboretum, duck and fish ponds, tortoise ponds, parking area, toilets, prayers room steps and a trekking track of 150 m altitude.

 

A study tour was carried out and divided into Monkey-Cup trail, categorized as an easy level ( a distance of 880 m , walking time of 1-1 ½ hour) ; Simpoh Gajah trail, categorized as an average level trail, suitable for broad age groups ( a distance of 1240 m , walking time of 2-2 ½ hours) ; Charcoal Kiln Trail, categorized as strenuous uphill trekking , suitable for physically fit trekkers only (a distance of 2980 m , walking time of 3-4 hours ) and Ridge Top Trail, categorized as demanding, with expecting steep-hill climbing, meant for physically fit trekkers ( a distance of 4280 m, walking time 5-5 hours).

 

The tour the group envisage is only along the Monkey-Cup trail; among others seen are Karas tree (fragrant wood), Terap tree (bark used for amking dyes), Nyatoh Taban (sap used for making dyes and colouring matters), Merantai melantai (fallen leaves gloss at night), Keruing Tree (resin used used as base for ointment, perfume and paint), Monkey-cup (meat-eating plant , and the name of the trail was given), Bertam (weed plant in a developing forest), Callyphylum tree (said to cure aids), Buffalo Logging Track (a road where logging was made), Kapur tree (resins smells of camphor), Saga tree (named after our first National car), the Damar Minyak , Araucaria and Pine tree arboretum (the Malaysian long-fibres trees).

 

 

 

 

A short tour then to the Forestry Museum followed, opened to Public on May, 5th, 1983 to aid visitors understand various facets of forestry contributing to development, recognizing function of forest through exhibitions, asa source of reference in science, history and art and promoting  awareness and appreciation of forest. Divided into six sections; Forestry Diorama, Silviculture, Etnobotany, Entomology, Forest produce and Wood processing section.

 

Observations found that the place is clean, well kept and organized. Implementation through quality management as accord to ISO was seen. It takes great commitment of all to attained the status.
