FROM THE DESK OF:
BERNARD ROWE RIDING PRESIDENT
Your association held its first breakfast / information meeting on September 27th. Thanks and congratulations to the 83 people who came to hear Senator Gerry St. Germain. The on-site survey results overwhelmingly approved the format, time, and location of the meeting.  Senator St. Germain’s speech earned a higher approval rating than that currently enjoyed by President Bush. This was a great start to the planned series of meetings. So, mark your calendars for breakfast on Friday November 16th when James Moore, MP for Port Coquitlam/Coquitlam, Port Moody will talk on the future challenges for Canadian conservatism.

The Canadian Alliance national organization has been very active. National Research Director, Prof. Tom Flanagan organized a policy forum on economic efficiency for the weekend of September 8-9. It was a productive and stimulating exercise in economic applications and implementation.

On the October 12 – 14th weekend, the party held a very successful regional conference, also in Richmond. Over 150 CA activists attended plus some 20 MPs and Leader Stockwell Day. The conference gave great opportunities for one on one talks with possible leadership contenders Diane Ablonczy, MP and Stephen Harper.

Talking of the leadership. The National Council has called an election for early March 2002.  Mr. Day will resign at least 90 days prior to the election date. So, whether you wish to support Mr. Day, who has not yet indicated his intention to run again, or plan to vote for another candidate, be sure that your membership is current!  Only paid up members will have the opportunity to vote. If you are not sure of your membership status, please call

Doug or Thelma Gayton at (604) 261-5038. See you at 7.15 a.m. on Friday November 16th!

CA/PC POLICY CONFERENCE

Constituency Directors Barb Wilson and Ray Leitch attended the conference on September 15th on behalf of the Board of Directors.  The meeting was opened by Geoff Chutter from the P.C.s and Erin Airton from the C.A.  The conference was not organized by either party but meant as a ‘bringing together’ of conservative thinking people. Gordon Gibson, Jr. from the Fraser Institute led off the morning with an overview of what he thinks has to be done to change the direction of governing in Canada.  This was followed by a Question and Answer period.  Participants then broke into small groups and reviewed policy changes proposed by both parties not knowing which policy was from which party.  People were often found criticizing their own party’s policy statements!  It was felt overall that there were enough similarities in both party’s policy platforms for us to beneficially work together.

In the afternoon we then looked over policies from both parties, and again it was felt that there were a lot of similarities.  The meeting closed at 4: 30 p.m. with everyone agreeing we should continue to have such useful dialogue.

CHAMPAGNE CHRISTMAS LUNCH

We are planning a Christmas Brunch for Sunday, December 9th from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Lounge at Langara Gardens (behind 601 West 57th Ave).  We will have Christmas Carols led by the musical stylings of Doug Gayton, and we might even have a visit from Santa Claus!  The menu will includes salads, muffins, croissants, sausages, bacon; omelettes cooked to your specifications and Christmas desserts.  To start off we will have Champagne and Orange Juice!  This will be a fun event with little or no? Politics – just a chance to get together at a special time of year.    Cost:  $25.00 for adults & $12.50 for children under 12 (who are especially welcome).  Space is limited, so book early with Ray Leitch at 604-816-1913.

YEAR END DONATIONS!  With 2001 coming to an end, if you have not made a donation to the party, and want to get a tax credit, now is the time to send it in.  Just fill in the enclosed card and return it in the envelope provided – we will see that you get your 2001 FEDERAL TAX CREDIT
