FAQS
There may be some spoilers here, so if you haven't seen the film...
What is the name of the song playing on Neo's headset while he is
asleep at the computer in the beginning of the film?
-
The song is "Dissolved Girl" by Massive Attack off of their 1998 album,
Mezzanine. In a few days, I will try to add a sample here for your
listening pleasure ;)
What is the date at the beginning of the movie?
-
9-18-99: This date/number series pops up periodically throughout the film,
although this is questionable as I have received conflicting "reports"
as to what the beginning date is. For example, the time Neo gets up for
work is 9:18 a.m. and the date that appears at the end transmission is
9-18-99.
What is the name of the company Neo works for?
-
Well, the outside pan of the building reads, "Metacortex" (a play on words)
while on the inside it is spelled "Metacortechs".
What are those characters on the computer screens on the Nebuchadnezzar?
-
The glyphs on the computer screens generally consist of reversed letters,
numbers, and Japanese katakana characters. Katakana is a script that is
very angular in nature and is made up of 46 basic characters. For more
information on katakana, check out the Japanese
Writing Tutor Page.
Where did they get those phones?
-
So far, to the best of my research, it appears to be the Nokia 8110i, which
is available only in Asia. Check out Nokia's
Homepage to see if you can spot (or confirm) a match.
What is the name of the book Neo hides the $2000 in?
-
The book is Simulacra and Simulation, written by Jean Baudrillard,
and considered his first important step towards theorizing postmodernism.
The section that Neo specifically places the cash in is a chapter
entitled "On Nihilism".
What is the message that is first sent to Neo on his computer?
-
The message begins with: "Wake up, Neo..." followed by "The Matrix has
you...", "Follow the white rabbit." and "Knock, knock, Neo."
What is the name of the city?
-
There never is a city name shown. There are hints relating to real cities
such as Chicago (with the mentions of Wells and Lake and Wabash and Lake)
and it was filmed in Sydney, but there never is any specific city name
shown.
What is the name of the hotel Trinity first appears in?
-
The hotel is called the "Heart O' the City Hotel" and she first appears
in Room 303. Funnily enough, the room where Neo is heading into just before
being shot and realizing he is "the one" is in the same hotel, and the
same room. Nice little tie-in, huh?
Where does Neo first appear?
-
Room 101. Has a bit of an Orwellian ring to it, doesn't it? For those of
you who haven't read , Room 101 is where the lead character, Winston Smith,
is taken for a sort of "torture".
What songs are playing in the nightclub where Neo meets Trinity?
-
The songs start with Rob Zombie's "Dragula" and end in The Prodigy's "Mindfields".
What is the song that is playing during the Kung Fu training
scene between Neo and Morpheus?
-
This issue is still in debate, but so far the majority of emails
I have received note that the song is "Spybreak! (Short One)" by the Propellerheads.
And now for some miscellaneous info:
-
The name of the "hovercraft" is the Nebuchadnezzar.
-
All of the Exit signs in Neo's city are green, which is another hint as
to the location where this film was shot (Australia).
-
Zion is the last human city.
-
The back of the television that Neo and Morpheus are watching reads, "Deep
Image Radiola Television".
-
Some of the fighting programs Neo learns are listed as Jujitsu, Kempo,
Drunken Boxing, and Kung Fu.
-
Know Thyself is the Latin motto that appears over The Oracle's kitchen
door.
-
AA034 is the license plate of the car they drive before they are deceived.
-
AWA is also on the back of the television, and appears on the tower/building
they crash the helicopter into.
-
The elevator is stopped at Level 41 when Trinity sets the explosives.
-
The pillars, which have been shot up and virtually destroyed in the gun
fight, amazingly enough are back to "new" when the explosives go off: In
other words, in one scene they are damaged, in the next, they are not.
-
Most of the fighting at the train station takes place by platform 3.
-
A Hewlett Packard sign can be spotted on the wall behind Neo and Agent
Smith in the station.

When Neo enters the hallway to talk to Morpheus after seeing the Oracle,
the cookie in his hand already has a bite out of it. However, when Neo
actually takes a bite onscreen, the cookie is whole as he brings it to
his mouth.
-
When the whole crew goes into the matrix to accompany Neo to see the Oracle,
Trinity emerges wearing a kick-ass strapless black leather dress. However,
later in that same scene (namely, when they are in the wall) she is wearing
black leather pants and a tank top (also kick-ass, by the way).
-
When the sentinals first come looking for the ship (and fail to find it)
Morpheus, Neo, Trinity, et al climb a ladder to get to the navigational
controls. There are two computers and a big window there. However, a moment
later there is a shot of the crew looking out the window from the main
deck- the place with the chairs and Tank's terminal- not the navigational
deck where they were a second later.

When Neo and the head Agent are fighting in the subway, they fall onto
the floor and they each say the other has an empty gun, YET the Agents
gun clearly has at least one round left in it as the top slide to it is
forward rather than back. This is not a sad observation as when they break
and make a point of throwing their guns away, the Agents gun now has a
slide on his gun that is clearly back (showing no bullets left) - so where
did the other bullet go?

-
After Neo and Trinity shoot up the lobby they look back at what they have
done, and all of the dead people are gone.
-

-
Nebuchadnezzar is the name of the king who was looking for Christ when
he was born (i.e. Morpheus is looking for 'the one').
-
When Trinity is being chased up the fire escape, there is a "3D" billboard
in the background featuring a Desert Eagle with a smoking barrel (the .50
cal guns that the agents were using). I hope everyone realized that 'normal'
people don't fire those guns one-handed.
-
The actors spent 5 months, 8 hours a day in martial arts training.
-
Zion (according to webster) 1 a : the Jewish people : b : the Jewish homeland
that is symbolic of Judaism or of Jewish national aspiration c : the ideal
nation or society envisaged by Judaism
-
When Neo and Agent Smith fall to the ground after meeting in mid-air, Smith
looks at his gun is disbelief when Neo tells him he's empty (Neo's first
subconscious success at manipulating the Matrix).

In the scene where Cypher kills Switch and Apoc, as he is about to kill
Neo, it shows Neo's face in the chair and Neo has no eyebrows. Then, when
Trinity gets back and kisses him, he has eyebrows.
-
When Trinity escapes from the helicopter, it crashes into the building
and there is a very nice explosion. Well, it seems that when Neo pulls
Trinity up from the rope, the other building is back to its scyscraping
norm.
-
Perhaps the most humorous scene is when the guard kindly asks Neo to remove
any metallic objects. Then he shows his guns and proceeds to destroy the
lobby. When the bomb goes off however, there is no metal detector in the
lobby.
-
As Agent Smith's pulls up to the Heart of the City hotel in the beginning
of the movie, his car tag reads '70858'
-
When Neo is first trying to escape from the Agents, Morphius tells him
to go to the scaffold. Right next to the Metachortex building, you can
see a 'Citybank' building.
-
In the same scene where the old pepsi machine is spotted, just as Neo 'beckons'
to Agent Smith, you can see what looks like a banner or a machine turned
over that reads, 'Do The Dew'. It's a very short glance so you have to
look fast.

The movie that is being played on the TV [featuring the giant rabbits]
in the Oracle's apartment is "Night of the Lepus." Here's the link to it
at the IMDB. It's actually
credited in the soundtrack section of the credits, because you can hear
some of the music.

When the crew is calling for an exit, Tank has a road map on his screen
which is definitely Chicago.

Just came home from watching "The Matrix" and in one seen where Neo is
in the "real world" there is a close up of him and he has eyebrows, the
next seen he doesn't and then he does again. Ed. Anyone know exactly
which scene this is?

In the Oracles' living room where the spoon kid is, the TV features a few
scenes of giant rabbits running through the streets.
-
There is also a Pepsi machine in the background during the fight at the
train station.

When Neo and Trinity are on the roof, "authorized" is spelled "authorised"
[with an "s" versus a "z"]. Ed. This is another hint as to where this
was filmed, as the Aussie spelling is with an "s".

When Morpheus brings Neo to the loading program for the first time Morpheus'
sunglasses don't have a reflection, we turn to Neo and then back to Morpheus
and he suddenly has a reflection. Check it out!
