PREFACE

Thomas Chalkley, 1675-1749, was one of the most eminent of the second generation of Friends ministers, evangelists, and missionaries, along with Samuel Bownas, Thomas Story, Thomas Wilson, Samuel and John Fothergill, Lydia Lancaster, and others. Originally born in England, he later settled in Philadelphia, were he supported himself as a merchant seaman. As even these few pieces will attest, he traveled widely both in his work and in his ministry, saw and experienced much in his life, and had a great concern for the Society of Friends, and indeed for others.

It is extremely regrettable that very little of the work of this vitally important figure from this transitional period remain in print or available on the web. This little collection, it is hoped, will introduce contemporary readers to a true but neglected giant in Quaker history and inspire a desire to know more about him and the Master, Christ Jesus, that he served for most of his 74 years.
