Quotation of the Day for January 3, 2004

"What does seem certain is that UDI [unilateral declaration of independence] has advanced the prospect of African rule in Rhodesia by several years. Had Rhodesia stuck to its existing Constitution Britain would have been unable without breaking the promises of successive British Governments to interfere to speed up the process of majority rule. Now it is a matter of time before Rhodesia collapses."

- from The Guardian newspaper from Thursday, Nov. 11, 1965; forseeing the demise of Zimbabwe (then called Rhodesia). [The submitter notes: this seems appropriate given the current situation in Zimbabwe.]
