The Story of a Woman Worker
|
| As the title suggests, the movie is focused on the life of a woman worker
and actually not only one but three women workers. The leading role
is played by Chen Qiuxia, who is a very diligent worker and wishes to
found her own factory. She has two good friends, one is boyish and often
stuck by her grandmother who constantly try to be the match-maker for her;
another one is from a poor family and tries to get a better life but falls
in a wrong way with wrong people. Charlie plays an orphanage who is
raised by his rich uncle and is supposed to get married with his uncle's
daughter. However, Charlie falls in love with Chen Qiuxia, who is
working in his uncle's factory. After all the twists and obstacles,
the two finally get together. And of course, Chen Qiuxia starts her
own factory by a loan from the government and fulfills her dream.
The movie isn't that appealing to me since it more emphasizes on the three women workers and their stories are mostly flat and cliched. Charlie doesn't have much screen time, but when he shows up, he is as radiant as ever.
The most interesting scenes to me are those with Charlie and Chen Qiuxia together. A couple of romantic scenes, some conversations, and the final ending scene. In the ending, Charlie leaves his uncle's big factory and settles in a farm. He always dreams to be a cowboy working on a farm. He writes a letter to Chen Qiuxia to confess his love and apologizes for his mistakes. This letter is so well written, plain, sincere and touching. The actor who dubs Charlie's voice does a wonderful job. His voice sounds extremely good, sexy and emotional. Chen Qiuxia finally goes to the farm to see Charlie, and the two shares a happy hug.
Chen Qiuxia was originally a singer, and she sang quite a few songs in the movie. Although she wasn't so good-looking, I do enjoy her singing a lot. Chen Qiuxia won the best actress award in the Panama Movie Award. Ming Ming also won the best supporting actress in both Panama Award and the Golden Horse Award.
