Veitar's Journal

Having come from a small Hold and Fostered at a large Weyr, I made many friends but lost closer ones.

My training started very early, as a Healer, though many people at both Hold and Weyr thought I ought to become a Beast crafter for my abilities with the animals. But my calling is true: I love people and I hate it when they are ill or injured, or mind-sick, or most awfully, soul-hurt.

My first encounter with a soul-injury was a local Blue rider whose dragon was scored during a Fall and was so badly frightened that the moment they came back to the ground, the dragon lit into the air and apparently decided that he would never fight again. He
betweened and never returned. I was only four at this time, but I remember the incident quite clearly.

The rider was distraught, and still quite young, I think he was only in his teen aged years. He was going to slice himself open upon a broken fence nail, but I stopped him. I forget exactly what I said, but I know that my words -- or perhaps something more? -- caused him to at least pause in his fearful action.

He became my guardian and defender, and in fact he offered to allow me to room with him if I needed it.
His name is O'lel, by the way. He has no dragon, but he does have the heart of a brave rider and I still admire him.

My formal training came from a Master Healer who has since moved to a large island somewhere East, his name being Vanya. He taught me that there was much more to healing than just cuts and colds, that there are wounds that go deeper than a nail through the wrist or a knock on the skull from a fall. He taught me many things about how to fix all those injuries and far more, but he himself seemed in need of some mind-healing, which I believe he thanked me for offering in my humble way, by asssisting me in my Apprenticeship.

I am now 19 turns old and have seen several Holds and Weyrs. I have stopped at
Sapphire Weyr because one of the riders has decided that I am Searched! I don't know what I can do on dragonback, but I know that getting to places hard to reach by the ground could be solved quite quickly by my riding a dragon!

My Foster mother Raanatani says that I am very worthy of such a search, and she seems quite thrilled. I think I'm the first of her Fosterlings to be Searched in fact!

Well, I'll stop babbling now. I know I'm not a Harper for words, but I hope that my journal here will inform everyone interested of my life and times.
Here is a little Brown firelizard which I Impressed recently, I have named him Keykin, since he seems to fit just right wherever he wants to be, and opens up things with a passion. (Like any cupboard in sight, anywhere that has a little scrap of food in it!)

Keykin will grow up quickly, so check back soon when he's a little bigger.

Perhaps by then, I will have Impressed?

Keykin came to me from Karath Weyr, if you want to visit there it is at

When he was a baby!
Well even I don't believe it really, but Sapphire's eggs finally hatched! There were so many of them, I didn't know if I'd be able to Impress at all...
Imagine my surprise when this Bronze came to me! I was so stunned! His name is Gatith, and I love him with all my heart!

When we are ready to fly, and fight Thread, Gatith and I have been invited to an exclusive Wing in the Kshau Protectorate, called the Touch of Life wing. They want me because of my healing talent, and I truly appreciate the work they do!
And here is Gatith as he is grown up! It has been two long Turns since I Impressed...
Gatith and I have been asked to go to the Kshau Protectorate, and join a wing. That will be great, since I know many people there.

The wing I have been selected for is the Touch of Life wing, all made up of healers like me! We go around to the sites of threadfall, and though we rarely have to fight thread, we go out to the field and attend to the injuries there, so that the riders don't have to waste time going back to the weyr. If they are too injured to ride, we carry them, and lead their dragons back safely.

That is the life I have always wanted!
