KENNY MORELAND:
CLOUDBURSTS AND COMING CELEBRITY
Kenny
Moreland is a Brighton-based singer/songwriter with worldly
connections. He creates his self-written acoustic based rock tunes in Sussex
studios and then promotes them via mp3.com.
Now, with his craft finely tuned, Kenny thinks it’s time to face up
to a live audience and let them be as impressed by his talent as many of his
virtual fans testify to be.
With a new album due at the end of 2001, and plaudits a plenty
via the web, it seemed the right time to take stock and have a listen to a
compilation of Kenny Moreland’s work so far: Cloudburst,
is a twelve track compilation of equally thoughtful and tuneful songs with all
the hooks and attitude in their rightful places.
Cloudburst is never cluttered. If you think John Lennon
circa ’Mother’, or Paul Weller around the time of his pastoral
masterpiece, ’Wild Wood’, you’ll get an idea of the drive, space and
accomplished textures of all Cloudburst‘s dozen tunes.
Kicking off with the slightly psychedelic highlight, Back 2 Back,
which finds Kenny ‘looking for direction’ and ’the enemy’ - it gives the
impression that were it to be updated with a full band, especially some Steve
White ‘Out Of The Sinking’ era drum patterns, it would be riding high
both in the charts and on festival stages across Europe.
Kenny’s sound is definitely Internationalist, with breezy strumming,
mind-filtering choruses and grown-up rock sensibilities .. tracks two and three,
Winter Days and Friday Night, are equal in their beauty and
harmonies .. lyrically Kenny seems to be searching and frustrated, yet
juxtaposes his feelings with summery-acoustic-strings and mind-opening sound
effects. Truly awesome.
Can he cut it without the effects? Well, yes he can. Summer Sun is
testament to the fact. One man, one voice, one guitar and a love that’s for
the moment - like the season of summer itself. Nothing good can last for ever,
may be the message - but once it’s recorded for posterity it’s there to the
world’s end.
Why Kenny Moreland presents his inaugural solo set to the world as
a compilation is hard to fathom. This is a debut album to be proud of. Twelve
tracks and not one stinker among them .. all the above, plus Coming
Through, Cloudburst and City Angel are corkers .. Brighton has a new
son, may Kenny Moreland shine for much longer than the city’s
all too fleeting summer sun.
