In toronto/mississauga, the theaters with "BIG SOUND BIG PICTURE BIG DIFFERENCE" are
in the famous players movie chain. (a VIACOM company). the coliseum 10 movie theater in mississauga was the #1 theater in north america for 39 weeks starting may 17, 1997.
My point is the AMC 24 , AMC 20 and AMC 30 theaters(brand new ) here only meet the standard of 'what is needed' , i.e. great seating, good picture, o.k. sound. the o.k. sound is due the surround sound not matching the front channel sound and brittle sou
d quality.
Famous Players theater sound is better due the
BRYSTON brand amplifiers they use and the fact that all the coliseum theaters are THX .
the uptown theater has bass that rocks!, yet the stadium seating in this theater has very little knee room.
some facts:
the bulbs last about 4000 hours (should be changed after 2000 hours.)
the dreaded red tint, missing black detail is caused by the projection bulb fogging up due to the uv light fogging inside of the bulb, then filtering the blue light, causing a red shift.
(i have seen this red tint in theaters before the coliseum, silver city movie theater expansion in the toronto area. l have not seem this effect in these new theaters.)

Was interested in your description of SDDS. When it first came out, it was pretty unreliable. I read somewhere that it became a joke at the time and some said it meant, "Still Doesn't Do Shit."

I think the DTS systems are fantastic. From a singer's point of view, the sound is excellent. Enough superior to mention.

Excellent page!! I only wish every person in the world was required to read and sign your page to better educate themselves about the theatre industry. I've read your entire page, and it's great!! I have only one concern, when patrons visit a theatre an
purchase items from the concession stand for their personnal consumption, please inform your readers of the importance to pick up their trash and deposit it into the trash containers at the back of the auditorium once their movie has ended. If only we c
uld make everyone an "Usher" for a day...... If everyone would consider cleaning up after themselves, what a better enviroment they would have each time they visited a movie theatre.
Thank you for the page and the forum!!

Site is fine, -but putting DTS as # 3 takes You down !
As Martin Brooks of Southampton in this guestbook, i too mean that SR-D is last - You get drop-out for every splice, and for optimum listening You have to see the film within 3-4 weeks in theatre. -It is simply too cheap - except when You're buying the ge
r...
DTS/70 must be the way foreward: No huge extra expences for the magnetic track, and sound as new for years. -Look foreward to this getting common.
SDDS - I never heard it. -Represented in Denmark only on (few) Columbia/Sony/TriStar pics, and the only theatre running SDDS has only 3 front speakers. -I'll wait !
I'm running, what DTS calls "The Smallest Show on Earth" - "Malling Bio" in danish village with just 4.500 people - trying to do something big within a very small house:
Screen #1: 104 seats (originally 202, but now space for but and legs instead)
2 lovely,. old Philips DP70 (Norelco AA II) with
Dolby CP65(70) for 4- and 6-track magnetic + DTS-6 (35mm) and SR-D.
Screen #2: 39 seats, the mishap of Cinemeccanica Victoria 9 (someday there will be money for a n y t h i n g else) CP65, DTS-6.
If not the worlds smallest public cinema, then at least the smallest with 6-track digital sound !
Maybe, americans used to "big is beautifull" will
want to avoid - but that's what the site can lift.
Have also once been leading one of the lands really greatest cinemas, the TRE FALKE BIO,
Copenhagen (1980-81) running a 10 month series of old 70mm, before collective junking of practically every 70mm print in DK (disaster !)
On reel Todd-AO - deeply curved 50 feet screen two weeks (or so) each: "Where Eagles Dare", "Sound of Music", "Hello Dolly", "Ice Station Zebra", "Paint Your Waggon", "Dersu Uzala",
"Doktor Zivago" and many moore. -Well, -those were the days...
Please let my main question stand open for Mr Harris, doing such otherwise great job in restoring my old loves: Why this ugly, Dolby-oriented mix on My Fair Lady, Spartacus and Lawrence. -Mr Spielberg must have been bought and paid for, when he claimed, t
at Lawrence sounded better than ever - with all the dialouge coming out of the center hole. - SHIT !!
The 3 films mentioned all had beautifull, old-fashionned discrete 6-track - mix with sound constantly following actors across the big screen.
That ought to be in those expensive, restored versions. too.
Moviegoer's Guide is splendid - don't You dare to stop !!

You have a slick site here. I never thought somebody could ever make a living at working at a movie theatre, but you hit it big. I'm a big fan of movies too, but I can't see serving popcorn and dishing out tickets. I'd probably be pretty good at yellin

Hello there.
I found your pages interesting and informative, but have a few points I would like to raise.
I am the Head Projectionist with a volunteer based film society at the university in Southampton - Union Films (www.soton.ac.uk/~uf).
We are currently equipped with a Vic 5 35mm projector with SR-D and DTS. Having worked extensively with both, I feel that DTS is vastly superior to SR-D. From an audience point of view, SR-D lacks the clarity of DTS - citing for example periods of comple
e silence or subtle noises. SR-D suffers immensely in comparison to DTS in wear and tear - dust, scratches etc, which reduce the quality of sound.
From a projectionist's point of view, DTS is also superior due to it's significantly better redundancy - if the timecode can't be read in a section of film, (eg over a splice), it will continue playing from the CD-ROM for a user-specified duration (normal
y a few seconds). SR-D on the other hand will "drop-out" into SR if there is even the slightest gap or damage to the film, especially over splices. It is common for films in SR-D to get readings of 5 and upwards (0=perfect, 8=Fail) through a DA20 decode
simply due to dirt and everyday use.
I haven't worked with SDDS, although I have come across prints with a SDDS track. I've heard it's good, but it's not all that common over here in England. However, the fact remains that as long as an soundtrack is printed on the film, it will get damage
(probably more so than a CD-ROM).
One small point I noticed - you say SR is basically SR-D without the Digital - don't forget that Digital splits the surrounds but SR does not.
You make the comment that 70mm is sliding into extinction. I would agree with this, but from the angle that it should be saved. If you compare a 70mm film and 35mm version, on screen, the 70mm one provides a much clearer, sharper and steadier picture.
t is not compressed, and gives a much better viewing experience. Now that the abolishion of mag-striping in Europe and USA has forced distributors to get it done in places with less stringent regulations such as China - this too will push the price up, a
d make it less popular (not to mention the cost of buying a 70mm or dual gauge projector!). However DTS offers an ideal solution to this problem, but it remains to be seen if it will get taken up at all.
It would be a shame to see 70mm disappear, since there is little further improvement to be made with sound at the moment - improving picture quality should be a priority for the industry don't you think?
Some rarer film formats you may like to add:
1.75:1 - UK widescreen - very rare now
1.37:1 - Academy/Standard (1.33 - very little real difference)
Well, its good to know there is someone else out there who can tell when something sounds good or not. Too many people use their local cinema without thinking or appreciating how good/poor it is. I get very annoyed when I go to a poorly set-up cinema, o
pay to see a very low presentation standard because the whole experience does not work if the film is played in the wrong sound format, or even worse it is out of focus.
Anyway, an interesting site, keep up the good work.
