Dirk Benedict was born March 1, 1945 under the name of Dirk Niewoehner. He grew up in White Sulphur Springs, Montana and he still divides his time today between Montana (where he has his main home) and L.A.
Dirk got into acting on a dare during his college years and changed his major to drama after he fell in love with the profession.
Dirk is best known for his roles as the rogueish Lieutenant Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica and the equally mischevious Templeton Peck aka Faceman on the A-Team.
The actor is very private, but supports the Galactica revival through his participation in the trailer and his occasional appearances at conventions.
He is currently single and lives with his two sons from a previous marriage on a ranch in Montana.
FUN FACTS:
Dirk really loves to smoke cigars (or fumerillos, for insiders) although he lives otherwise extremely health conscious, following a macribiotic diet, which helped him overcome cancer.
Dirk also loves music: he can sing and play several instruments. In fact, he once founded a Dixie Band who may still wait for him in Seattle. :-)
As a teenager, Dirk worked as a logger (Mountain Man, anyone?).
The name "Benedict" was derived from "Eggs Benedict" after an agent suggested he find a new name.
Dirk had difficulty finding work early in his career, because producers thought he looked "too handsome." (Can somebody explain that one to me???)
