Georgia outplayed Spain by 34-3 on Saturday, 22nd
February, at slippery pitch of National Grounds, in
downtown Tbilissi, the Caucasian state's Capital
The game was delayed by 45 minutes whilst volunteers were removing snow from the pitch. Markings were made with sand and some 10 thousand partisan spectators, defying the chill, took shelter under western stand's shed The game was electifying itself, esp in the first half. Spain could not be criticized for not trying enough but Georgia played hearts out in the aftermath of Lisbon defeat The Lelos outclassed the Lions in every department. Possession was split to a tune of 50/50 but Georgia used the ball more efficiently. They played modern, smart game and frequently tore the visitors defence thru sheer pace and skill On the wet day grubber kicks and garryowens were over- used. Urjukashvili chased one in the opening minute after Lelos pack had driven a defensive maul for 40 metres. 5m scrum resulted, GEO swung the ball wide and after patient phase-building prop Sosso Nikolaenko jogged across the line The game then followed similar pattern. Captain Ilia Zedguinidze crashed over from close quarters but was penalized for double movement. Nevertheless, from very next setpiece young Merab Kvirikashvili recovered his own up-and-under, supporting forwards carried the ball and Urjukashvili, wearing mitts, outsprinted the cover Next it was Badri Khekhelashvili's turn to score under the posts following 5m lineout, maul and Katsadze's hit. In meantime, Manuel Cascara failed from both 35m PKs After the interval Georgia picked up where they left but a promising rolling maul were swarted at the goal-line after prop Goderdzi Shvelidze's rucking indiscretion Lelos easily killed-down the resulting 'power play' and when they were restored to full strength, instantly delivered KO punch: another rolling maul sucked Spanish defenders and the ball was thrown to Gregoire Yachvili, who was outstanding with spectacular hits and sound tackles on the day Then wholesale subs followed and the contest was over Scoring: 7-0 (5') 12-0 (13') 19-0 (32') 22-0 (39') HT 27-0 (55') 27-3 (62') 34-3 (80+2') FT Georgia: 15 Khekhelashvili, 11 Katsadze (18 Mamuka Gorgodze 70' in pack), 14 Urjukashvili (22 Elizbarashvili 57'); 13 Zibzibadze (21 Gundishvili 57'), 12 I.Guiorgadze, 10 Jimsheladze; 9 Kvirikashvili / 1 Shvelidze (sin-binned 43' for stomping; 17 Ratianidze 45'), 2 A.Guiorgadze, 3 Nikolaenko; 4 Didebulidze (18 Mtchedlishvili 57), 5 Matiashvili; 6 Bolghashvili (pulled off 45'-53'; moved to backline 70'), 7 Yachvili, 8 Zedguinidze CAPT; Not used: 16 Khinchagashvili, 20 Archil Tchumburidze 5T: Nikolaenko, Urjukashvili, Khekhelashvili, Yachvili, Gundishvili; 3C, P: Jimsheladze Spain - P: Cascara |
