History
The beginnings:

In January of the year 1977 the friends Maria Mendiola and Mayte Mateos were dancing flamenco and singing traditionel songs in the hotel "Riu Palace Tres Islas" on the Spanish island Fuerteventura. They just wanted to have fun and they had no ulterior motives. In the audience sat two men from RCA,one of them being Leon Deane, and they recognized the talent both Maria and Mayte had. After their show the men asked them if they already had had a record contract and when they answered they hadn't they immediatly got one.The duo was named after a special kind of rose, the Baccara rose.So they got to Hamburg,Germany.Soon after that they met their future producer,Rolf Soja, who co-wrote their songs.Till now it all seemed like a dream. But it was a dream that had just begun.

Riding on the wave of sucess:

Their first and best-known song
"Yes Sir,I can boogie" was already written and they just needed someone to sing it,so Baccara had their chance. And what a chance. The songs was a charts forward and was Number 1 in England,Germany,Japan and Australia. In all other European countrys it reached the Top Ten."Yes Sir,I can boogie" was the first Number 1-Hit by a female duo and by a Spanish one ever.Other songs like "Sorry,I'm a lady","The devil sent you to Lorado" or "Darling" followed and also were hits.In 1978 Baccara represented Luxembourg at the Grand Prix d' Eurovision in Paris with their song "Parlez-vous francais" and reached Number 7.Baccara was able to celebrate many sucesses.

The end:

The end was reached in 1981.The contract ran out and Mayte left the band. She wanted to start a solo-carrier.Maria made solo-songs,too. Two songs of hers are
"Stupid Cupid" and "Aerobic".Both carriers didn't last very long.Their records were just published in the countrys, where the´central points of their fans had been, for example Germany and Spain. After they had vanished from the scene no one heard from any of them until 1989,when Maria made a new try to go back to sucess with New Baccara,a readoption of the original duo.The onliest difference was the new partner,Marissa Perez,Maria had.Although their songs were great for fans and some other peoples,no real sucesses could be made.

Now:

Today both Maria and Mayte have their own
Baccara-bands.In 1999 the album "Baccara 2000" was published. The songs are still the same, sung by Mayte and her new partner Cristina Sevilla, and on the CD are some new songs, too, like "Carino" or "The clapping song".Maria is still performing together with Marissa, although they have dropped the 'New' from their name and are now offical called Baccara.
