Josie cranks her music up to the max now that she has her new Freemont Park CD.
In science, the class talks on echolocation. Professor Z urges her to not listen to her music so loudly at the risk of losing her hearing, she ignores him.
During the night, Josie continues to listen to the music, to Corrine's dismay (she can't sleep). While playing, sparks of electricity run from the CD player into the headphones.
The next morning, Josie wakes up hearing a continuous thumping sound. Thinking it is Corrine snoring, Josie dismisses it. The alarm clock goes off and Josie shrieks loudly at the sound, fortunately, Corrine turns the alarm off. Josie figures that the thumping sound is her heart beating. Josie's hearing has been amplified.
In the hallway, Corrine points out that Lucas been acting strangely. Vaughn walks up and Corrine informs Vaughn that Josie's hearing is bothering her, after she tells Vaughn to quit shouting.
"Maybe you're developing magic-dolphin-super-bat hearing" – Vaughn to Josie.
Josie overhears from down the hall, Principal Durst telling Professor Z to give a pop quiz this day.
"You have to admit it is so much fun to see the panic in their faces when they freeze at the mention of a pop quiz." – Principal Durst to Professor Z.
Josie warns the others but Stew hears the news from Vaughn.
"There's a pop quiz in science today." – Vaughn to Stew
"Oh, good, I like soda pop." – Stew to Vaughn
Outside, Lucas and Vaughn are talking, Josie overhears from a far table. Lucas asks Vaughn if he and Josie are together, to which Vaughn replies no, to which Josie is shocked and angered, and he gives Lucas permission to ask Josie out.
Before Science, Josie blows up at the two of them, angering Vaughn that she was listening and depressing Lucas for rejecting him. In class, Stew unwittingly tells Professor Z that Josie spread the word of a pop quiz. Professor Z, angered, says that instead of a pop quiz, there will be a 50 question closed book exam worth 20 percent of their grade.
Josie, figuring that her super-hearing ability is now more of a curse only causing trouble, walks outside. She hears Victor's voice from some location. Looking around, she figures the sound if coming from beneath her. Ear to the ground, she can hear Victor giving a little speech to the few around him that they are about to restart Pearadyne.
"You are among the fortunate few who will witness the rebirth of Pearadyne." – Victor to his crew.
Josie realizes that what they've been looking for has been under them the entire time. Vaughn comes out and Josie stops him from talking about what happened in class, telling Vaughn that she heard Victor. Now interested, Vaughn convinces Josie to find a way to get inside, even though Josie doesn't want any more trouble caused by her sensitive hearing.
Into the basement, Josie comes to a wall and says the sound is coming from that point. Vaughn punches through the crummy bricks and a door is revealed. Opening it, they are before an old hallway, some of the old ruins of Pearadyne Industries.
The place appears that the workers stopped in the middle of their activities to leave, they realize something bad happened. Josie is reluctant to go further, worrying about getting hurt (emotionally) and hurting Vaughn as well. Promising to not keep secrets from each other, they press forward; Josie says the voices are getting louder. They come to a familiar doorway, going through it, it takes them to where the invention is (See episode: "Wormhole"). They lay on the platform listening to Victor talking, though only Josie can hear him.
Far beneath them, Victor places Josie's Chi Gong ball in a container, it levitates and spins. He orders everyone to safety positions and to bring power online. Victor pushes a combination of numbers into a number pad (each number with a sound, like a telephone) and leaves. The doors, on his level and up where Josie and Vaughn are, close and the lights go out. Josie and Vaughn are not only trapped, they can't see their way back to the door.
Josie, using her super-sensitive hearing to echolocate, leads the way back to the door. A bean of light shoots into the center of the gyroscope and it begins to spin. Recalling the sounds from the number pad, Josie punches in the correct combination and the doors open. The start sequence aborts, the computer exclaiming the test chamber has been breached, and alarms go off. The noise paralysis Josie and Vaughn is left to carry her.
Running down a hallway, they go into an elevator and proceed going up. Victor, Grant, and a few others arrive in time to see the "arrow up" light on the elevator. Victor orders all the exits secured. The elevator opens, revealing Victor's library, to Vaughn's shock. Josie's hearing has also returned to normal. Josie hides as Victor walks in and inquires if Vaughn saw anything unusual, to which Vaughn replies that he hasn't, and goes off back to school. Victor turns around, heading back to the telescope, Josie sneaks out of the room. Victor says that he is glad to see Vaughn's curiosity and that he will soon show Vaughn what is going on with Pearadyne and he places the Chi Gong ball back in the telescope.
Josie tells Professor Z that she is sorry about spreading he word on the pop quiz, and apologizes to Lucas, who tells her he'd rather discuss it later. Josie and Vaughn lead Corrine, Marshall, Lucas, and Professor Z to where the doorway is, but it has been sealed by another wall. They figure it means that Victor knows Vaughn was there, and worry what's going to happen to Vaughn. After they walk away, a vertical beam of light appears, from it, the janitor emerges.
Episode notes:
- Janitor's secret message: "Victor is closer than anyone thinks."
*Was listed as the secret message for "Nutrition" even though the date matches "Echolocation".
Personal thoughts:
This one brought with it some questions about the size of Pearadyne.* Josie+Vaughn fans will love it. I didn't think too highly of the J+V moments. The plot makes some serious steps forward though, something we've been waiting for after about five fillers. It is annoying how dense Vaughn is that after all the evidence, Vaughn doesn't totally believe his dad is up to something. I guess it must be confusing having a father who isn't exactly on the side of good.
Rating: 7/10
*Pearadyne Labs is on the other side of the wall, not under the school
Well, not so. We now realize that Pearadyne Labs is quite a big place: "Pearadyne is "huge" and mostly exists underground, where there is a vast network of tunnels and corridors. It is connected to the school by an underground tunnel and connected to Victor's mansion by a corridor leading to an elevator. (Pearson Mansion is within walking distance of Blake Holsey, probably about a five minute walk away.)" - Jim Rapsas
