Stu is asleep in class by Schroeder’s cage; Schroeder asleep inside. Class is in session and Professor Z is teaching about sleep. After showing the class how Stu and the mouse are exhibiting the signs of sleep, Professor Z drops a book on the desk in front of Stu, the noise causing him to jump up, startling him awake. Professor Z continues by telling them that no signs of REM sleep were observed meaning that Stu didn’t have any dreams. Stu is still shaking off the shock of being woken up in front of the class. Josie asks why it is necessary to sleep. Corrine comments that Josie’s question is derived from the fact that Josie stayed up all night to finish her homework. Professor Z tells her that during sleep the body repairs tissues and boosts the immune system. Lucas adds that some believe that the brain uses sleep to catalog memories. Professor Z asks whose turn it is to watch Schroeder activity during the night. Josie replies that that person would be her. She believes it is an opportunity to prove just how much one can get done without sleep.

“The mouse is sleeping as we can observe and, just like Schroeder, Stu is exhibiting several of the classic characteristics of sleep.” – Professor Z whispers to the class.

“Personally, I like sleeping.” – Lucas
“That’s because without it Lucas wouldn’t have the opportunity to wear his spaceship jammies.” - Marshall
“Good one, Mr. Monkey slippers” - Marshall to Lucas
“Before anyone spills the beans about my Hawaiian nightshirt…” - Professor Z

11:52pm, Josie is cataloging Schroeder’s activity but she is very tired. Schroeder is running on his hamster wheel. Josie writes that using a lamp to simulate daylight allows Schroeder’s light cycle to be altered. After completing the sentence, Josie falls asleep. The sound of thunder awakens her. Schroeder is rapidly running on his wheel. There is a white light with a blue tint coming from the doorway to the basement. Josie slowly walks to the door, hearing Victor’s voice. Victor stands in the doorway, saying that he knows that “you” and the Trent-girl have been seeing a lot of each other and that the measure of the child is a reflection of the measure of the parent; Josie and her mother aren’t to be trusted and she is using “you.”
Josie is lying asleep on the desk. Electricity runs along wires leading up to the desk. The electricity flows through Josie and then to Schroeder and his cage. Josie pops up, wide awake.

It is morning and Josie continues to watch Schroeder. Marshall, Lucas, and Corrine walk in, amazed that she is awake. Corrine figures that Josie must be tired after staying up two nights in a row. Josie corrects Corrine, telling the three that she feels great and that it is due to a dream that she had. She tells them that it was of Victor saying that she was not to be trusted. Professor Z walks in and is surprised that Josie has logged Schroeder’s activity past midnight, the requirement, and went through to morning. Professor Z looks over the logs and ventures an idea that Schroeder has become cathemeral. Lucas believes that Josie has also become cathemeral.
In the halls, Lucas asks Josie if she is alright but the question annoys her. She is tired of being asked that. The four walk past the front door but Josie sees Victor walk in the door, white light behind him. Josie just watches, the floating Chi Gong ball is hovering in Victor’s hand. Lucas walks back to Josie and Victor is gone. Instead, Vaughn is standing where Victor was. Vaughn asks if Josie is alright but Lucas tells Vaughn to leave Josie alone. Josie tells the two to stop and is about to tell them who she saw but doesn’t complete her sentence. Instead, she goes to her room for a nap.

“Josie knows we need a new power source. She’ll stop at nothing to interfere with our plans.” – Victor.

In the science room, Professor Z is monitoring Schroeder who is swiftly racing on his wheel. Professor Z is worried about Schroeder’s condition as he flips through the log book.

“Schroeder, slow down before you burn out.” – Professor Z

Upstairs, Josie is lying on her bed. The time is 4:58pm and Josie wants to sleep but can’t.

In Professor Z’s office, Josie, Corrine, Lucas, and Marshall are trying to figure out Josie’s problem. Corrine tells Professor Z that Josie has been hallucinating. Josie rules out that seeing Victor a couple of times is important. Professor Z thinks Josie’s hallucinations are the result of sleep deprivation causing REM sleep to occur while Josie is awake. Lucas commits that they will get Josie to sleep tonight.
1:24 am and Josie is still very awake. Marshall and Lucas are falling asleep by Josie’s bed. Corrine, on her own bed, falls asleep while trying to get Josie to do some breathing relaxing exercises. Lucas suggests counting sheep and Marshall drifts off, telling them to wake him when they get to a million. Lucas can’t stay awake any longer as well and falls asleep on Marshall’s shoulder. Feeling desperate, Josie sits on her bed watching the three. Josie hears Victor’s voice again. He is in the doorway, white light behind him. He says that Josie will stop at nothing to interfere with their plans and that that is why Josie’s mother sent Josie to Blake Holsey. Directed at Josie, he says that everything happens for a reason but says Vaughn’s name. It occurs to Josie that what is happening isn’t a waking dream. It is Vaughn’s memory.

“That’s the ticket, a nice warm glass of milk.” – Marshall to Josie.
“That was my third glass. Anymore and I’ll float away.” - Josie to Marshall.
“Float away, Josie, on fluffy clouds of wispy sleep.” - Lucas.

Victor continues talking, to Vaughn, saying that he’ll inherit his mother’s half of Pearadyne and that he has a right to know. Victor slowly walks out of the doorway. Josie follows. The hallway is now Victor’s home Victor’s office. Opening the telescope container, Victor takes out the floating Chi Gong ball, telling Vaughn that the ball is what Josie really wants. Josie attempts to touch the ball but she seems to be pulled back and is suddenly back in her room. Scared by the vision, Josie walks out of her room. She heads to Vaughn’s room.
It is 1:30 am when Josie opens Vaughn’s door. It isn’t locked. Vaughn springs awake. He is only wearing his boxers. Seeing it is only Josie, he relaxes and fetches a shirt. There are boxes on the floor with stuff inside. Josie asks if he is going somewhere but Vaughn evades the question. Josie explains that even though she isn’t ready to trust him, Vaughn is the only one who can help. Josie informs Vaughn that she can’t sleep and that she is having hallucinations. Only the hallucinations are more like Vaughn’s memories. Vaughn doesn’t believe it but Josie has another hallucination and is able to recite words that Victor and Vaughn said to each other. The conversation is about how Vaughn’s mother never trusted Kelly Trent and that Kelly would do everything in her power to get the floating Chi Gong ball, and Vaughn’s futile attempts at defending Josie. Vaughn confirms that what she said is in fact one of his memories but he doesn’t know if Victor has the Chi Gong ball again. Josie says that she’ll proceed back to her bed. However, she has a different plan in mind.
Lucas awakens and finds Josie is not there and he wakes up Marshall and Corrine. The three run to Vaughn’s room but Josie is not there. The three then run off to look for Josie. Instead of staying in his room, Vaughn leaves as well.
At Pearson mansion, Josie enters Victor’s office and goes directly to the telescope. About to open it, Victor’s voice pierces the silence. He is leaning back, sitting on his desk chair. He tells her that she could be arrested for trespassing. Josie protests, saying the door was unlocked and that she knows that Victor has hidden in the telescope. Victor practically dares her to open it if she is so sure. Opening the telescope container, she discovers that it is empty. Josie is angry, accusing Victor of moving it. Victor though, reveals his own agenda of testing whether or not his son could be trusted. His experiment has proven to him that Vaughn can’t be trusted while around Josie. Josie accuses Victor of being afraid of Josie to which Victor responds with a mocking chuckle. Victor changes the topic, telling her that he has heard of Josie’s situation. He approaches Josie, his face looking to the floor:

“I’ve heard about your little problem. What’s it been? Three nights now without any sleep? Let me ask you something, Ms. Trent. How do you know that I’m actually here? That we’re really having this conversation? And that I’m not really… Your worst nightmare?” – Victor.

Looking up at Josie, Victor’s eyes are white! Only the whites of the eyeballs and the blacks of the pupils, no eye color. Victor seems satisfied as he stands there, watching Josie run away.
Into the hallway, Josie doesn’t appear to know where to go. She runs down the hall a short distance and opens a door. White light surrounds her and a woman’s voice speaks. A woman looks over her crying baby:

“Vaughn, sweetie. Vaughn, I have to leave for a while. I can’t tell you where I’m going but I promise you I will come back to you one day. I just don’t know when.”

She shows Vaughn her necklace, telling Vaughn that it will do something and that he’ll figure it out if she doesn’t come back in time. She adds that what she and Victor are doing will make the future a better place. The light goes out and Josie is still in the hallway. She then continues running.
At the school, Lucas accuses Vaughn of causing Josie’s hallucinations. Marshall breaks the two up, saying that they need to split up to find Josie. All four go separate ways. Josie walks into the school, turning the corner she is confronted by Victor. Josie is afraid. She tells Victor to leave her alone. Victor tells Josie to concentrate on his face. The image flashes between Victor and Vaughn. It is really Vaughn. He asks her to trust him. She really wants to.
In the science room, electricity runs up the wires to Schroeder’s cage, flooding the cage and Schroeder as well. Schroeder stops running on his wheel and calmly rests. Lucas, Marshall, and Corrine walk in. As they are about to leave, Lucas notices that Schroeder has stopped running.
Out in the hall, Josie is sleepy but she insists on talking to Vaughn. In the lounge, she asks Vaughn about a memory of his mother, telling Vaughn that she saw his mother. She falls asleep on Vaughn’s shoulder though. Lucas, Marshall, and Corrine walk in and see Josie asleep The three walk back out again.

Josie walks down the stairs, greeted by Corrine, Lucas, Marshall, and Professor Z. Josie has slept for an entire day. Josie has learned her lesson about sleep being necessary. Professor Z walks off and Josie asks if any of them have seen Vaughn but none of them have. Josie walks off to Vaughn’s room as Corrine is about to say something. Lucas requests that Josie find out on her own.
Upstairs, Josie knocks on Vaughn’s door but receives no reply. Opening it, the room is empty.
At Pearson mansion, Victor tells Vaughn that he had the movers set everything back up in Vaughn’s room (at the house). Vaughn tells Victor that things were beginning to get better between him and his friends. Victor tells Vaughn that he is having some business associates for dinner so he’ll need to wear a suit. Lastly, Victor welcomes Vaughn back home.

“It’s nice to have friends.” – Victor to Vaughn.

    Episode notes:

    • Janitor's secret message: "In dreams, truth is spoken. A memory shared brings reconciliation. That left behind will be found and returned"
    • When Josie is trying to go to sleep during the night, with Marshall, Corrine, and Lucas' assistence, sunlight can be seen coming through the window's blind shades.
    • The scenes where it seems like Josie is dreaming are intentionally directed with the idea that Josie is actually dreaming. However, during post-production, it occurred to the crew that the scenes actually not be dreams.
    Personal thoughts:
Some interesting things about this episode. When I first saw the episode title, I figured it was a filler episode. That would also have fit the routine of having the first episode of the season a major one and follow it with a filler episode. I was wrong.
This episode fills in some gaps about the past, though you have to think about it to realize that is what they are doing. We learn that Kelly Trent and Sarah Pearson had a working relationship, though it apparently wasn't a very good one. Most of the other stuff we already knew but Josie didn't.
The episodes seem to be getting darker, as Jim said they would. To me, everything was in a normal threshold until Josie was reciting what Victor was saying at the same time and the flashing back and forth between them. They sounded like The Borg from Star Trek. The darkness factor was good in this episode.
White-eyed Victor was totally scary. The whole "are you sure you're not dreaming now?" thing was also rather spooky. On the StrangeDays forum, there was also some fun conversations sprouted by the pajama teasing from the classroom.
