Go to: Days at Blake Holsey High
|
Vaughn struggles to match his opponent in the wrestling tournament. Lucas comments that an athlete's ability just goes down hill after his or her prime, while intelligence improves with age. Josie doesn't find his remark amusing and snaps back asking if he's talking about the same intellect he used to lose to Lefler in the school chess tournament. Vaughn loses the round, Victor walks out, angry, leaving Vaughn and Josie disappointed. Apparently, Vaughn's losing streak began when he bulked up over the summer, placing him in a higher weight class. Now Vaughn wants to go on a diet to lose weight, putting him into a lower weight class. Josie doesn't like the idea of Vaughn wanting to be on a diet. Midterms are coming and the school is in study mode. A nutrition bar, Powernut, has a vending machine in the school and the students, Lucas and Vaughn most of all, take full advantage of it's advertisement of lower calories and ability to increase concentration. During the course of the next week, Vaughn succeeds his goal, moving down a weight class, and Lucas has done nothing but beat Lefler at chess, 19+ times.
"I dedicate the following display of chess domination to Josie Trent." – Lucas to himself. Marshall and Corrine are deep in studying, as is Josie. Lucas is confident of his future "A" and feels he doesn't need to study.
"Go a couple practice rounds with me?" – Vaughn to Stew "I don't want to hurt you." – Stew in reply. "You do so." – Vaughn to Stew [Stew nods agreeing] In class, Vaughn and Lucas are the first two to finish their science midterms, in a record time of an hour. Lucas' score is a "D"; Vaughn also didn't fare too well. Josie talks to Vaughn, who ignores her, saying that losing weight and the Powernut bars are helping him win. Josie wants him to stop eating the bars but he continues to ignore her. Lucas is having improved luck in his games as well.
"My brain is a universe unto itself." – Lucas to himself.
Vaughn is in another match, doing very well. All of a sudden, Vaughn loses energy and his opponent capitalizes on Vaughn's weakness, costing Vaughn the match. Josie talks to Professor Z about Vaughn's obsession with the bars. Using a cal meter, they determine the bars have a food energy reading of an impossible less one calorie of food energy. Calling for Principal Durst's attention, she agrees to the creation of an appropriate meal to compensate for the student's malnutrition; Josie, Corrine, Marshall, and Professor Z get to work. Using a fan to push the aroma of the food throughout the school through ventilation tubes, the crowds come pouring into the cafeteria, all except Vaughn. Lucas is still miserable over Josie as she goes to take the food to Vaughn, who remains hooked on the bars. In a last resort, Josie pours the spaghetti over Vaughn's head, breaking the hold of the bars, saying she cares about him. In response, he does the same to her, saying that he cares about her as well. In another wrestling match, Vaughn is victorious. When Victor asks what happened, Vaughn replies that he won for himself, not Victor.
Episode notes:
wow, this episode has a bad taste (pardon the pun). This is the type of filler episode that I would expect the see from the shows airing on TNBC before DCKids aired shows on it. Strange Days at Blake Holsey High usually seemed higher than them. The Janitor removing the vending machine would have been a much better touch. It gets a two for some amusing moments. Josie+Vaughn people may get their enjoyment from this one though. Josie+Lucas won't like it as much. Marshall and Corrine were virtually forgotten about. This episode didn't have anything in it that a different episode could not have shown better. I would watch it again if the opportunity came up, it just wouldn't be one I'd jump for. EDIT 10/4/05: After some time now, I have developed a slight liking of this episode. I especially like the part where they were cooking the food. Even though the educational aspect of this episode was vague, I thought, and there were things that did not make it seem like an exceptional episode (which I talk about above), I will bump it up two points on the rating. Rating: 4/10
