Professor Z is teaching about electricity in Science class. Vaughn is drawing something at the top of his paper. He asks the class if they know the first person to experiment with lightning and grounding techniques and calls on Corrine. Corrine talks about a Thomas Francois d'Alibard de France. Stu, sitting next to her, corrects her by saying that he believes Professor Zachary is referring to “the kite guy.” Professor Zachary acknowledges Corrine’s answer as a correct one but that he was actually looking for the answer of “the kite guy” known as Benjamin Franklin.

“Now he’ll outstare the lightning. To be furious is to be frightened out of fear.” - Professor Zachary to class quoting from Shakespeare.

While that is going on, Josie is not paying any attention to him since she is watching Vaughn and what he is drawing - it is of something that resembles a wormhole and a person about to walk into it. Vaughn turns around and sees her snooping at his paper. Vaughn then quickly shuts his binder which stuns Josie.

“Electricity is one of the fundamental forces of nature and as with many powerful forces, it has the potential to create as well as destroy.” - Professor Zachary to the class.

Later that night, Victor begins another round of tests at Pearadyne2. Meanwhile, in Lucas and Marshall’s room, Josie tells Corrine, Marshall, and Lucas about what she saw Vaughn drawing. She believes that Vaughn may try to go through the wormhole. As they are discussing it, Lucas notices the gravity sensor fidgeting.
Running down the stairs and to Professor Zachary’s office, thunder booms in the background. When the four arrive at the office, they do not see Vaughn. Josie, walking into the office, assumes that Vaughn has already gone through the wormhole. Lucas warns Josie that it may be unsafe to step into the area since the tests are still going on and the wormhole may be unstable if it has just opened. As Josie attempts to dismiss the Lucas’ warning, the wormhole opens and Josie falls through.
Josie reappears in Professor Zachary’s office. However, it is now daytime and the office looks a bit different; there are light brown wood shelves, which hold bottles containing fluids of unknown chemicals, and stuff still in crates. Josie sees a newspaper on the desk. Picking it up, she reads the date October 4th, 1879.

Josie is in denial as she wanders out of what will be Professor Zachary’s office. Men are working quickly to set up the school. Two men pass her carrying a wooden crate labeled “New Chichester Preparatory Academy.” She walks slowly down the main hallway, trying to figure out what she has just seen. Two women quickly pass her, the first one carrying a chicken and the second one carrying a basket of yarn. This effectively scares Josie and she turns around to attempt to leave. But she almost bumps right into a lady who appears to be Principal Durst.

“Get those new students’ cases upstairs on the double. Mr. Avenir is not paying you to dawdle!” - Worker to two other workers.
    <

    “What’s a Chichester?” - Josie

Josie screams in shock, scaring the lady as well. Josie calls her Principal Durst which appears to offend the lady and she corrects Josie by saying that her title is Headmistress Durst. Headmistress Durst assumes that Josie is a girl by the name of Leslie Turner from West Kansas City and says that she received the telegram that Leslie would be arriving to New Chichester Preparatory early. Headmistress Durst asks Josie if she has presumed correctly and Josie replies that she is Leslie Turner. Observing Josie’s “ridiculous” outfit, Headmistress Durst informs her that her “trunks” have already arrived and that she can find them in her room, which is at the top of the stairs. Headmistress Durst advises Josie to change before Mr. Avenir sees her. Josie makes an attempt to escape by saying that she need to see something in the Professor’s Science office before she changes. However, Headmistress Durst is very insistent that Josie change and blocks her way, leaving the only course of action to be to go up the stairs to the room.

“Are those waist overalls you are wearing?” - Headmistress Durst to Josie.

“What an odd child.” - Headmistress Durst, about Josie.

Josie comes down the stairs after finding the trunks and changing into a dress that resembles that timeframe. Her hair is also curled. She stumbles walking down the steps but regains her footing. She wanders back into the Science office and proceeds to the middle of the floor. Impatiently, she begins jumping up and down in a futile effort to make the wormhole open. Unfortunately for her, a boy walks in on her. He asks Josie her name and Josie replies that she is Leslie Turner. The boy introduces himself as Blake Holsey. Josie is a bit surprised by the boy’s name. He tells her that he heard that a new student had arrived early and that others will be arriving shortly. Josie proceeds to ask Blake if he saw another new student who was wandering around the school looking like he did not belong. Blake replies that he did not but offers to show her around the school in an attempt to find the boy she seeks.

“And I shant take no for an answer.” - Blake to Josie.

Outside, at the front of the school, the construction is nearly complete. Blake tells her that his father is the architect and that Mr. Avenir is paying for the construction. Mr. Avenir wanted the school modeled after a British gentleman’s country estate. Blake Quotes that Mr. Avenir says that the design is “more conducive to educational excellence.” He tells her that Mr. Avenir had odd specifications for the school though. Such things that rooms and air vents had to be placed in certain locations and were not allowed to be in other locations and also that the Science Office had to have a sub-floor of palladium. As they are walking, a man stops them. He is angry that they have stepped in front of his camera and therefore ruined the picture that he was taking of the school. Blake apologizes to the man but the man walks off frustrated. Blake advises that they head inside. A storm is approaching the school.

“Blast! You’ve stepped into my photograph. Film is very expensive, you know?” - Mr. Eastman to Blake and Josie.

Meanwhile, Headmistress Durst walks into Leslie’s room in search for Josie, who Headmistress Durst believes is Leslie. She is astonished by the state of the room, a mess with cloths on the floor. She walks over to one of the desks and picks up Josie’s shirt. She stumbles in an attempt to read the shirt’s words and ends up saying “New-clear death weasel” (supposed to be “Nuclear death weasel”) and then sees Josie’s watch. She picks it up and tries to make heads or tails of it. The watch startles her when it begins beeping and she tosses it back onto the desk.
Downstairs, Blake and Josie walk through the main hallway. Josie asks him if he has ever seen any unusual occurrences in and around the professor’s science room. Blake is intrigued by Josie’s level of curiosity, saying that most girls their age are not interested in art and music instead of science. Josie tells him that he will find that she is not like most girls. Blake casually replies that he can see that. He goes on to confess that Science is not really his interest and says that things like peering into microscopes and flies kites in thunderstorms is not his thing. As they approach the Science office, there is thundering and flashes of light from inside the room that can be heard and seen through the glass. Blake asks what it is and Josie carelessly states that the vortex has opened.

“Have you ever seen any strange events centered in or around the science office?” - Josie to Blake
“You mean other than a pretty young woman jumping up and down in the middle of the floor? - Blake to Josie.

The door opens and Vaughn runs out, followed by Corrine, Lucas, and Marshall. Vaughn tells Josie that they have to hurry back. Blake boldly asks who Josie is. Corrine states that Josie is Josie. Blake replies that she is Ms. Turner. Vaughn does not care who Blake thinks Josie is and he immediately grabs Josie’s wrist and says that she is coming with them. Blake swiftly rivals Vaughn by grabs Josie’s other wrist and defends her from Vaughn’s apparent kidnapping. Though their debate is short, it is just enough time for the wormhole to close, trapping all of them in the past.

“Unhand her!” - Blake to Vaughn
“Unhand her yourself!” - Vaughn to Blake.

In the cafeteria, Josie, Vaughn, Corrine, Lucas, and Marshall sit at one long table. Lucas shows Josie an old picture that they found which gave them the knowledge of where and when Josie had gone. Vaughn is annoyed with Josie about her and Blake being together as well as Josie thinking that he would go through the wormhole without notifying her. They begin to panic about how to get back. Because the wormhole is not centered in their current timeframe, they have no way of getting back. They also can’t stay in their current timeframe for very long because the real students will be arriving soon which eliminates their cover story. Blake enters the round; Vaughn sarcastically says that Josie’s boyfriend is coming to which Josie replies that they are not a couple. Blake reports to Josie that he told his father about the strange event in the professor’s office. Blake’s father suggested that it was probably caused by the coming storm due to an electrical discharge. Marshall and Corrine think about that while Josie gets a revelation – there is a storm coming. Josie asks Blake if he could locate sticks, string, and cloth. He replies that that stuff could most likely be found in the basement. She tells Blake to lead the way, and the rest follow. On the way out, Marshall quickly stuffs several items of food into a napkin.

“Once we found this picture of you and your boyfriend, we knew you were stuck in the past.” - Lucas to Josie.

“Remember last year’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest? Well, we raided the Costume Department, waited for Victor to start another run, and then we went through.” - Lucas to Josie.

“Guys, I hate to spoil our little costume party here but we’re stuck here. There is no open wormhole. If we don’t do something we’re going to be stuck munching little mini sandwiches fro the rest of our lives!” - Marshall to the group.

Out in the hallway, they quickly move through the main hallway. Josie explains that they are going to recreate Benjamin Franklin’s kite experiment. Blake stalls to question Josie but he is continuously interrupted by Vaughn, Lucas, Corrine, and Marshall. Josie says that the plan will work due to the palladium sub-floor in Professor Z’s office. Lucas says that, to keep from getting electrocuted, they can attach the string to a non-conductive surface in the office. Blake frantically asks for an explanation. Josie tells the truth this time, explaining to Blake that her name is really Josie Trent and that all five of them are from the future and that they need his help to return to their correct timeframe. Before Blake can decide if he believes Josie, Headmistress Durst calls for them to stop.

“Stand right where you are!” - Headmistress Durst.

Headmistress Durst marches to them and says that she has received word that her first five students have arrived at the train station. She knows that they are not who they claim to be. She proceeds to tell them that she has summoned the Constable and Mr. Avenir and then orders the five of them to her office. Josie turns to Blake but he says that he can no longer help her. Vaughn sarcastically says “Some boyfriend” to Josie.

“You five are imposters!” - Headmistress Durst to Corrine, Marshall, Lucas, Vaughn, and Josie.

In Headmistress Durst’s office, Josie, Corrine, Marshall, Vaughn, and Lucas examine their options. The storm is quickly approaching though and they are running out of time. With the door locked and the windows bolted closed, they agree to run when the Constable arrives and meet back in the Science office. They hear the door being unlocked and they ready themselves to scatter. When the door opens, it is Blake who enters. He tells Josie that he believes her, showing her her shirt and watch.

“I thought you might want them for your trip home.” - Blake to Josie.

In the Science office, they all prepare for the kite experiment. With everything set, the kite is released outside and the final adjustments are completed inside. Josie steps aside to talk to Vaughn. She apologizes for assuming that he would go through the wormhole without telling her.
Lightning and thunder is becoming more frequent as Mr. Avenir and the Constable arrive. With Headmistress Durst, they proceed to Headmistress Durst’s office, only to discover that the group of five is no longer there. Headmistress Durst offers a search for them but Mr. Avenir turns to the Science office and tells her that he knows exactly where they are.

“I assure you, Mr. Avenir, the moment I discovered the fraud that was being perpetrated upon us, I…” - Headmistress Durst to Mr. Avenir, who interrupts her.
“Upon us, Headmistress? Don’t you mean upon you?” - Mr. Avenir to Headmistress Durst.

Rain begins to fall outside as the Constable opens the door to the Science office. Blake and Vaughn immediately push back the door, keeping the Constable, Mr. Avenir, and Headmistress Durst out in the hallway. The Constable demands the door be opened.

“This is the Authorities! Open the door immediately!” - The Constable

Josie insists that Vaughn get to the middle of the floor, where she, Corrine, Marshall, and Lucas are. Blake assures Vaughn that he can hold the door by himself but Vaughn doesn’t believe him. The Constable continues to try to shove the door open. In the sky, lightning strikes the kite and an electrical current flows down the string, into the office, and jumps from the key to the floor effectively charging the floor and opening the wormhole. Josie, Corrine, Lucas, and Marshall go through. Vaughn leaps into the wormhole after they disappear and the wormhole immediately closes. A second later, the Constable shoves the door open. Blake is the only one in the room. Headmistress Durst tells the Constable to aid her in searching the school and the two run out. Mr. Avenir turns his attention to Blake, who stands in paralyzed in amazement at what he has seen.

“Well done, Josie. Mr. Holsey, you and I need to have a little chat, about your future.” - Mr. Avenir

Josie, Corrine, Marshall, and Lucas emerge from the wormhole in the Science office. They are in the correct timeframe. Their celebration is short lived as they realize that Vaughn did not make it through.
In the Science office, the time is night as Vaughn emerges from the wormhole. He notices that no one else is with him. The Janitor comes out from a corner and tells Vaughn that he is safe. Vaughn demands to know where the others are. The Janitor replies that they have “gone on ahead” and that Vaughn has to stay hidden so he does not interfere. Vaughn asks what the year is. The Janitor reveals to him that it is 1977.

“An important event is about to happen and you mustn’t interfere.” - The Janitor to Vaughn.

In the Science room, Corrine tells Josie, Lucas, Marshall, and Professor Zachary that there is no record that Vaughn was left behind in 1879. She did learn that Mr. Avenir changed the name of the school from New Chichester Preparatory to Blake Holsey Preparatory in honor of Blake. Blake Holsey became a prestigious Science teacher and later rose to the chairman of the school board of governors. Josie walks out of the classroom, vowing to find Vaughn. Out in the hallway, the Janitor is fixing a chandelier between the Science Room and the Recreation room as Josie swiftly continues down the hallway. Time then freezes and Josie2 walks out from one of the rooms. She goes to the Janitor and tells him that nothing good will come of what is happening. The Janitor just stares at her. Josie2 then presses her wrist device and disappears. Time continues. The Janitor watches Josie as she walks down the hall.

“Nothing good will come of this.” - Josie2 to the Janitor.

*Note: “Trunks” are an old term for “suitcases.” They are refering to neither "shorts" nor "bathing suits."

    Episode notes:

    • Janitor's secret message: The experiments begin anew. The enemy is seen. One is lost.
    • The Importance of Being Earnest - A play created by Oscar Wilde, it pokes fun at the English upper classes using light satire humor. First performed in 1895.
    • In Cold, Principal Durst says that the Blake Holsey High building was built over 150 years ago. However, this establishes the school was built in 1879 which makes the builting no more than 130 years old. From what the crew has said, the age of the building given in Cold is an error.
    Personal thoughts:
Blake is an interesting character. He was never interested in Science until Josie arrived. Safe to say that she changed his life. He could probably be paralled to Vaughn who also was never interested in Science before Josie arrived.
Overall, an excellent episode. I liked its casual feeling even though it has a serious plot twist to it.
