The science club goes over what they know. Marshall becoming invisible, Lucas aging 65 years, Corrine repeating the same day, and Josie and Vaughn going back in time.
“What we know is that this school has issues.” – Corrine. Marshall tells them that he read that a black hole is only a one way phenomenon. Professor Zachary tells them that what they probably are dealing with is actually a wormhole. As he tells them that if they begin thinking of their black hole more along the lines of a wormhole, Principal Durst walks in. Everyone conceals their notes.
“I just wanted to see what fascinating things the Science Club was working on.” – Principal Durst. She has them continue by saying that they were talking about wormholes. Professor Zachary tells her that they are discussing worms. Principal Durst seems disappointed. Principal Durst then tells them she has some other business to attend to and walks out. They don’t believe that she bought their cover story.
“This is the hole where the worms live.” – Professor Zachary to Principal Durst. In her office, Principal Durst calls Victor Pearson.
“Mr. Pearson. It’s about the Science Club. I think we may have a problem.” – Principal Durst to Victor on the phone.
Victor presents his latest design to Vaughn. It is a tie pin that can record conversations. Vaughn finds it strange that his father is showing him an invention, since he never does. Victor tells him that he has noticed the improvement in Vaughn’s achievement. He tells Vaughn that he wants Vaughn to wear the pin to school. He tells Vaughn that he believes the Science Club has information that may affect national security. Vaughn reluctantly accepts to do it. Victor has one other request.
“Covert audio-surveillance technology. This has the power to digitally record conversations across great distances.” – Victor to Vaughn. In the science club, Vaughn tells them of an invitation to dinner, to the Science Club from Victor. The rest of them are stunned and aren’t sure how to reply. Victor is able to listen to them via the tie pin. A loud burst of thunder is heard. Professor Zachary tells them that he was looking over weather patterns and he has discovered that the temperature around the school is always several degrees warmer than the surrounding areas. Josie purposes the idea that it has something to do with the Pearadyne accident. Vaughn, feeling uncomfortable, walks out.
“That sounds… interesting.” – Professor Zachary. “Can’t refuse a free meal.” – Josie. “I like dinner. Can your dad cook?” – Marshall to Vaughn. In his room, Vaughn looks at the tie pin when there is a knock on his door. Opening the door reveals Lucas. Lucas is just making sure Vaughn is alright. They were concerned because Vaughn just took off. As Lucas is about to walk away, Vaughn invites him in. Lucas looks around. Vaughn tells him that he thinks it be a bit interesting to have a roommate, to Lucas’s surprise. Vaughn actually envies him and Marshall. Lucas notices Vaughn’s sound system, which was a Christmas present from his father. He then sees the tie pin, thinking it too is neat. Vaughn jumps and pries the pin away from Lucas.
“Marking the time. I’m actually in Vaughn Pearson’s room. This is a major leap up the social ladder.” – Lucas to Vaughn.
“Jewelry, stereos, video games, your dad must be pretty cool.” – Lucas to Vaughn. In her room, Corrine is practicing the song, Amazing Grace, for Drama class. Josie, however, can’t sing well at all. Josie is not looking forward to singing. Corrine tries to get her to do a warm-up but it comes out dreadful from Josie. Corrine suggests Josie warm-up alone and walks out.
"If you tell me to sing out loud and sing out strong, I'm leaving." – Josie to Corrine. Outside in the field a bit, Josie is trying to practice the song, “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.” Her voice is ultra-raspy. Vaughn approaches her; Victor is still listening via the tie pin. The earpiece Victor is listening from squeals and Victor abruptly scratches the earpiece out of his ear. His face looks quite sour as he continues listening to Josie’s attempt at singing.
“Are you in pain?” – Vaughn to Josie. Josie tells him she was trying to practice for Drama class. She asks him if he can keep a secret, which makes him uncomfortable, which is that she is scared of singing. Josie changes topics to what is Vaughn up to. He responds that he was just clearing his head. Josie then asks him about the time she went back in time to Victor’s lab. Vaughn, feeling more uncomfortable, interrupts her, telling her that he has to leave. As he walks off it begins to rain. However, it is only raining on Vaughn.
“Can you keep a secret? … I’m scared to death to sing in front of people. I mean, public speaking doesn’t thrill me either but set the words to music and it’s like nightmare city, population me.” – Josie to Vaughn. That night, at Pearson mansion, the Science Club is at dinner. Vaughn tells Josie that they don’t need to discuss what transpired earlier; it was only a coincidence. Victor comes out whistling a song familiar to Josie.
“That’s the song I was singing.” – Josie to Victor. “Really? I wonder why it popped into my head.”– Victor to Josie. After Lucas asks, Victor tells them that he invited the Science Club to dinner because he wanted to talk about science with some fresh minds. He jokingly adds that he, once a student at Blake Holsey high, remembers the cafeteria food. They all begin to eat when Victor purposes a topic of conversation, leading to a series of minor choking among the group.
“I was recently reading some papers about paranormal scientific discoveries.” – Victor to the group. Vaughn tells his father that Professor Zachary has the entire year planned out and there is no time to talk on paranormal discoveries. Victor tries to continue the thought, however.
“The paper I was reading in particular was about time travel. I bet Josie would be fascinated by the possibilities.” – Victor to group. Josie denies it and steers the conversation to whether or not the peas are canned or fresh. Victor, disappointed, responds that they are fresh.
“So, who here knows anything about black holes?” – Victor to the group.
The idea unleashes another round of choking among the group. Victor does not appear disturbed by the results his topic lines are producing. A crash of thunder sends a spark of lightning down the chandelier above the table and into a bowl of salad causing salad to fly everywhere. In surprise, Professor Zachary, Lucas, and Corrine eye the pot that once contained salad. Victor is unfazed by the occurrence, still sitting in his seat. He simply flicks a piece of lettuce from his shoulder and continues watching the group. In a group rally, Lucas tells them that there is a hurricane in Vaughn’s room. Josie informs them that the previous day, there was an isolated shower, only over Vaughn. Reviewing what they know about storms, they figure that Vaughn has somehow created his own pressure system. They wonder what he could be feeling to cause that kind of pressure. They split up to look for him.
“Guys, this is serious. Vaughn is attracting storms.” – Professor Zachary. Josie locates Vaughn walking along side of the school. Josie tries to tell him that they are all worried about him but Vaughn tells her to leave him alone. There is thunder in the distance.
“Stop being so nice to me. You’re only making things worse. Just leave me along.” – Vaughn to Josie. As Vaughn goes into the school, the outer door swings open before him. Inside the halls following Vaughn, wind blows which disrupts papers on tables and the bulletin boards. Vaughn walks into the science room, where Professor Zachary is. There is a storm cloud above Vaughn. Vaughn tells him that he has a problem, but doesn’t specify what. Professor Zachary tells Vaughn that whatever is going on inside him could be affecting what is going on outside of him, pointing out that Vaughn is heating and cooling like a weather system. Professor Zachary tells him that it is a good idea to let go of something you don’t want to hold onto.
“I’m confused. There’s all this stuff bottled up inside and I can’t get it out.” – Vaughn to Professor Zachary.
Outside, Vaughn has called together Josie, Corrine, Lucas, and Marshall. There is a large storm cloud above him. He tells them that he wanted to say “thanks” and that he is quitting the Science Club.
“I was. But that’s why I had to quit. Look, dad, I can’t spy on my friends anymore. It’s not right. You were wrong to ask me to do it.” – Vaughn to Victor. In front of the school, the group tries to get Vaughn back into the Science Club. Thunder sounds in the distance. Vaughn tells them that they are his friends but he was sent there by his father to keep an eye on them and to listen in on their conversations. He tells them that his father believes they can help his father with his research. The four are disappointed.
“Friends don’t quit on friends.”– Josie to Vaughn. Inside the main hallway, heavy winds blow through the school. Principal Durst is pinned by the wind against a hall as she is telling others that everything is alright.
“Everything’s fine, just a slight draft. Someone must have left a window open. There is nothing wrong at Blake Holsey High.” – Principal Durst. Thunder sounds as Josie confronts Vaughn, telling him that he doesn’t have to quit because of the storms. Vaughn tells her that it is also because he really took Josie’s journal. With that, the storms end. Josie, disappointed with Vaughn, walks off.
“Remember when your journal went missing and I said I didn’t take it. Well, guess what, I took it and I read it.” – Vaughn to Josie. In the Science room, Professor Zachary walks in on Vaughn sitting at a desk. Vaughn tells Professor Zachary that he doesn’t feel any better, even though he told the truth. Corrine, Marshall, and Lucas come back, telling him that while it will take time for them to trust Vaughn again they still want him in the Science Club. Josie is still angry.
“Like you don’t have any secrets Mr. I sleep with a night light.” – Lucas to Marshall.
Drama class lets out after Josie has finished her song (which was dreadful). Josie stops Vaughn in the hallway, asking him why he was in her Drama class. Vaughn’s answer is that he just wanted to hear Josie sing and that he wanted to be friends again. She asks Vaughn how she was and to tell the truth. Vaughn tells her that she was indeed awful, which Josie accepts. Josie asks Vaughn what happened to the missing pages from her journal, the ones about the black hole. Vaughn doesn’t know anything about missing pages and that Victor didn’t even see the journal. Josie realizes that this means there is someone else who they don’t know who knows all the information.
“What you did was pretty unforgivable. But I can forgive you.” – Josie to Vaughn. Later that thundering night, the Janitor mops the floors in the main hallway.
Episode notes:
This episode was amusing for most of the half hour. Josie trying to sing, the dinner at Victor's house, most of the scenes have at least one laugh in them somewhere. I loved how Victor flicked the lettuce off of his shoulder acting all unshocked after the lightning strike, like such a thing is completely normal. I thought it was interesting that Victor gave Vaughn a video game for his birthday. It seems rather un-Victor to make such a gift selection. Rating: 8/10
