Jay Dinshah, President and Founder of
the American Vegan Society, Dies

written and compiled by Corrynthia@aol.com

The vegan world is reeling in shock at the sudden and untimely death last Thursday of one of its most outspoken and dedicated leaders.

H. Jay Dinshah was at the forefront of the vegan movement, traveling countless miles to spread the idea of Ahimsa, a way of life centered on the idea of non-killing, non-injuring, and non-harming.  In 1960 he started the American Vegan Society as an educational organization that teaches compassionate living by Ahimsa and reverence for life.

AVS president, author, publisher, speaker and lecturer, newsletter editor, photographer, videographer, book seller, carpenter, businessperson -- these are all hats Jay wore, often simuultaneously. Between working on issues of the AVS quarterly newsletter, Ahimsa, he would think nothing of packing up his trusty (most of the time!) van with a plethora of animal rights- and vegan-related books, trekking off to a conference in another state. There he would set up a makeshift bookstore.  Often he would also be one of the guest speakers at the conference. To say that Jay worked incessantly to champion veganism is a gross understatement. His dedication and service to promoting the rights of all beings to a full and natural life knew no bounds. He labored ceaselessly to get the message out.

I write all this from first hand experience working with Jay.  Not only did I have the honor and privilege of meeting him and his wife, Freya, but also of being able to pick his brain as we worked side by side on the newsletter.  He was energetic, passionate, and quite knowledgeable on a wide range of topics, with a quick wit and a keen sense of humor. Amongst the misery-laden topics we dealt with we were able to share laughs now and then.  He lived a simple, orderly life, caring little about worldly objects.

Oh, and he loved bunny rabbits -- bunny rabbits at home in nature, where he felt was the only place they belong.

Anyone who is vegan owes at least a bit of gratitude to Jay for his lifetime of service to veganism.  He was vegan back in the beginning when it was difficult -- soy milk was not available in stores! His unwavering dedication helped make it possible for us to be where we are today. He was optimistic about the movement, and told me many times that he had seen great improvements over the years.  Yet, there was still work to be done.

Please take a moment to read below what some others have said about him, as well as visiting two websites that have been set up to honor this incredible man. Also, take this opportunity to rededicate yourself to veganism.  Pick a new area to explore, challenge yourself to DO something to promote more compassionate living. Write letters, make phone calls. Get involved in non-violent means of facilitating change. Jay is no longer with us.  His light has been passed to us, and it is now up to us to keep his vision alive of a kinder, gentler, more compassionate world.

(This news about the Founder of the American Vegan Society (Malaga NJ)  has been sent originally from Robert Cohen.)
A number of us fondly remember working closely with Jay and Freya Dinshah, and their noble, simple, and self-effacing and self-sacrificing character in the principled commitment to affirming an ethic of noninjury as our world's way forward into this millennium and beyond.

We who eat no animals, we who call ourselves VEGAN, stand upon the shoulders of a great man who left behind his magnificent legacy.

Jay did more to promote the VEGAN lifestyle in America than any other individual, beginning his life's work in the 1950's.  He was the founder of the American VEGAN society, and tirelessly worked to combine his compassionate message to thousands of people.

Animals' Agenda
by PrkStRangr@aol.com

It's time we in the animal rights movement get a bit more politically active, and I don't mean more pies in the faces of politicians.  Kim Stallwood, the editor of Animals' Agenda Magazine, wrote a very inspiring article in the newest issue of that publication about politics and how we can take the next step forward.

Stallwood suggested that we form PACs, political action committees, help write the platforms of candidates, run for office and a number of other suggestions that we should take to heart because these are the ways we will really effect change.

Way too many elected officials are controlled by special interest groups such as the meat and dairy industry, ranchers who overgraze public lands, the hunting lobby and other exploiters of our wild lands and wildlife.  Our letters expressing our opinions have effected a few changes, but there is much left to be done and many elected rascals that should be replaced.

If you are not familiar with Animals' Agenda, you should be.  It is a magazine for the thinking AR activist, and a nice balance of positive articles about the progress we have made and the work that is yet to be done.  Another big plus is the regular column by Dr. Andrew Linzey who holds the chair of theology and animal rights at Mansfields College, Oxford.  Linzey is one of the leading
spokesmen for the Christian point of view on Animal Rights.  Read his book Christianity and the Rights of Animals and/or sample his work here

The Christian Argument for Vegetarianism - Dr. Andrew Linzey    http://www.animalconcerns.org/ar-voices/Christian.html

The current issue also contains a humorous article on media coverage of animal issues by Pulitzer Prize winner Howard Rosenberg, and a large directory of animal advocacy organizations.

The new issue of Animals' Agenda was so good that I called the toll free number yesterday (1-800-426-6884) and renewed my subscription for another year and enrolled a friend of mine for a year as a gift.  Their website should be one of your favorite places.  But the website is only a sample of all the wonderful articles that come every other month to your mailbox with a subscription to Animal's Agenda.

The Biggest Demonstration
Ever Held for Korean Dogs

International Aid For Korean Animals (IAKA); The Eyes, Voice & Ears Of NYC, Inc.; and New York Activists and Groups Protest Korea's Illegal Dog Meat Trade.

To all animal-protection organizations and friends of animals,

Please join us.

IAKA and animal-protection activists in New York will stage two demonstrations, in front of the United Nations building in NYC and in Koreatown in Flushing, NY to protest the cruel and illegal slaughter and consumption of companion animals in Korea.

This event takes place in June because every year at this time dog meat consumption escalates in anticipation of the Korean "Bok" holidays (literally "sweltering dog days" of summer), when the vicious practice of beating, electrocuting, and often skinning dogs alive for boshintang (dog meat stew) peaks to celebrate Bok days.

The goal of the protest is to highlight the Korean Government's failure to enforce its own Animal Protection Law that bans cruelty to animals, and that specifically bans the slaughter and consumption of dogs. The Korean Animal Protection Society (the leading animal protection group in Korea) and it sister organization, International Aid for Korean Animals based in California, have
called for worldwide demonstrations and boycotts of Korean goods until the government enforces the Animal Protection Law and ends the dog meat trade.

Corporate sponsors of the 2002 Soccer World Cup in South Korea are also being asked to withdraw their support until the government takes action.

In South Korea, some people believe that torturing a dog to death produces better-tasting flesh with aphrodisiac qualities, so animals are routinely killed by hanging, prolonged beatings, and electrocution. Dogs are commonly skinned alive.

Some South Koreans also torture cats by hitting them on the head repeatedly with hammers or by placing them in sacks which are then pounded on the ground. The cats, often still alive, are thrown into large pots of boiling water and cooked with ginger, dates and chestnuts until liquefied to a brown paste called goyangi soju, which is mistakenly thought to be a remedy for rheumatism and joint problems. But Dr. Kim, Sung Yun, a medical doctor and professor researching rheumatoid arthritis at Hanyang Medical School said in a Chosunilbo newspaper article that cars are absolutely "not effective" in the treatment of arthritis. "It's a myth," he concluded.

Kyenan Kum, spokesperson for the Korean Animal Protection Society said, "This is not an issue of "cultural differences." Caring Koreans and most people worldwide know that no animal should be intentionally tortured and abused. Cats and dogs are simply not appropriate for human consumption because they often bite and fight back against their abusers. This leads to terrible cruelty and suffering. The Korean government recognized this fact when they created the Animal Protection Act, but now a few politically powerful dog dealers are preventing enforcement of Korean law. We need the help of caring people everywhere to stamp out this abuse once and for all."

The Princess and the Toad

Some years ago, our family expanded to include a one-year-old Siberian husky named Princess Misha.  Like all Siberian huskies, Misha had an innate love of the outdoors, and of course, the cooler the better.  She would lie curled up in a ball on top of a snowdrift on the coldest of winter days with her tail flicked over her only vulnerable spot -- her nose.  When fresh snow fell, sshe
would lay so still that she soon disappeared under a blanket of snow and became a part of the landscape.  Every so often, she stood up, shook off, turned in a few circles, and then laid back down to keep watch over her domain.

On warm summer days, she found the coolest corner in the house and spent her days napping.  Then after her nightly walk, she'd spend the rest of the evening stretched out on the cool cement of the front patio.  All through the hot summers and into the fall, this was her nightly ritual.

One summer evening, as we sat out on the front patio relishing a late-evening breeze, we saw a small toad hop out of the grass, then down the sidewalk to a few feet away from where Misha was lying.  Suddenly Misha stood up, walked over to the toad, picked it up in her mouth and then walked back to her resting place and lay back down.  She then put her chin down on the walk, opened her mouth and let the toad hop out while we watched in astonishment.  The toad sat there in front of Misha's eyes, the two seeming to stare at one another for some time.  Then the toad hopped down the walk and back into the grass.

On other nights that summer, we noticed this same ritual.  We commented on the fact that Misha seemed to have a fondness for toads.  We worried because some toads can be poisonous, but since she never experienced any ill effect and never hurt them, we didn't interfere.  If she spotted a toad in the street on one of her walks, she would actually run over to it and nudge it with her nose till it had safely hopped off the street and back on to the grass, out of harm's way.

The following summer was the same.  Misha enjoyed cooling off by lying out on the front patio after nightfall.  Many times, we noticed a toad within inches of her face.  At other times, we watched as she walked into the grass and came back to her resting spot with a toad in her mouth, only to release it.  The toads always stayed near her for some time before hopping off into the night.  The only difference from the previous summer was that she spent more nights in this manner, and the toads were bigger.  A toad always seemed to be close at hand.

One night early in the third summer, after letting Misha out, we watched as a large toad hopped out of the grass and over to her, stopping inches in front of her.  Misha gently laid her head down so that her nose almost touched the toad.  That was when it finally dawned on us -- perhaps there was just one toad!  Could Misha have shared the past three summers with the same toad?  We called a local wildlife expert who told us that toads can live three to six years, so it was entirely possible.  Somehow these two unlikely companions had formed a bond.  At first it seemed so strange to us. But then we realized we were very different from Misha too, but the love between us seemed completely natural.  If she could love us, we marveled, why not a toad?

I have to share this, it's lovely.

Misha had a minor operation that summer, and we kept her indoors for a while afterwards to recuperate.  Each night she went to the front door and asked to be let out, but we didn't let her.  Instead, leash in hand, we took her for short walks.  One evening a few days later, I went to the front door to turn on the porch light for guests we were expecting.  When the light came on illuminating the front stoop, there, to my utter amazement, sat Toad (as we came to call him), staring up at me through the screen door!  He had hopped up the three steps from the patio, and we supposed he was looking for Misha.  Such devotion could not be denied.  We let Misha out to be with her pal.  She immediately picked the toad up in her mouth and took it down the steps where she and Toad stayed nose to nose until we brought her in for the night.  After that, if Misha didn't come out soon enough, Toad frequently came to the door to get her.  We made sure that the porch light was turned on before dark and posted a big sign on the porch, "Please don't step on the toad!"

We often laughed about the incongruous friendship -- they did make a comical sight, gazing into each other's eyes.  But their devotion sometimes made me wonder if I should regard them so lightly.  Maybe it was more than just friendship.  Maybe in her stalwart toad, Princess Misha had found her Prince Charming.

Too Great The Price
by Guila Manchester

So step right up and watch this treat,
For here comes paleface down the street.
And all those wrinkles, let them show,
For those cosmetics have to go.

They test them in a rabbit's eye.
It does much more than make him cry.
If he goes blind it isn't safe
For me to put upon my face.
And never mind if he is dead,
Just so my lips are painted red.

It's going on this very day.
The brutes with clubs have found their prey.
A baby seal just three weeks old
Will be a fur coat being sold;
The bleeding body left behind
For mother seal to mourn and mind.

The only thing they take
Is blubber out of which they make
This stuff I wear upon my face.
It isn't beauty, it's disgrace.
If I have beauty, it's inside.
I'll let the years show through with pride.

So step right up and watch this treat,
For here comes paleface down the street.
Some kinds of suffering have to be,
But not because of vanity.
