HSUS Offers Emergency Preparedness
Tips For Companion Animal Guardians
WASHINGTON (February 14, 2003) — The Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal protection
organization, is offering emergency preparedness tips for pet owners, so they
may be prepared to care for their pets in these uncertain times.
“In today’s world, we must be ready for anything,” said Anne Culver, director
for Disaster Services at The HSUS. “Pets are a part of our families too, and we
need to plan now for their safety and well-being if an emergency should occur.
It’s better to get ready now than to be caught unprepared later. We believe
that a reasonable approach will address most situations.”
The HSUS suggests that all pet owners have an emergency supply kit for their
pets. This kit should include:
• A three-day supply of food and water, as well as bowls, cat litter and
litter box, and a manual can opener.
• Current photos and descriptions of your pets to help others identify
them should you and your pets become separated. Pets should wear up-to-date
identification, including the phone number of someone out of the area in case
your pet becomes lost while you’re not at home.
• Medications, medical records and a first aid kit stored in a
waterproof container.
• Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and carriers to transport pets safely
as well as blankets or towels for bedding and warmth. Carriers should be large
enough to comfortably house your pet for several hours.
If the need arises to evacuate an area, keep your pet with you. If it isn’t
safe for you to stay in the area, it isn’t safe for your pets. Pets that are
turned loose or left behind to fend for themselves are likely to become victims
of exposure, starvation, predators, contaminated food or water, or accidents.
Evacuation shelters might not accept pets, so it’s best to plan in advance
where you will go. “No Pet” restrictions at local hotels and motels might be
lifted in an emergency, so it’s best to ask. Check with friends and
family members who live outside your area to see if they can shelter you or
your pets if needed.
For more information on emergency preparedness for your pets visit
www.hsus.org/disaster.

Victory For Endangered Elephants
As Court Rules Against Ringling Bros. Circus
United
States Court of Appeals dismisses previous court's ruling that plaintiffs lack
standing.
WASHINGTON (February 5, 2003) - The U.S. Court of Appeals
overturned a lower court decision that dismissed a case on procedural grounds
charging Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus with violating the
Endangered Species Act. The ruling clears the way for the case brought by
a former Ringling Brother's employee, the American Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI), and The Fund
for Animals to present their case that Ringling Brothers routinely beats its
elephants with bull hooks to perform.
The decision by the court which grants the plaintiffs standing was based
strongly upon the statements of former Ringling Bros. elephant trainer and
co-plaintiff in the case, Tom Rider, who while employed by Ringling Brothers,
witnessed routine beatings of the circus elephants with bull hooks.
Consequently the United States Court of Appeals unanimously found that Tom
Rider suffers "aesthetic and emotional injury" from seeing the
elephants perform in the circus. The court found that Rider developed
"a strong, personal attachment to these animals" while working with
the elephants at Ringling Bros. for two years.
"The ASPCA is extremely pleased with the court's decision which allows us
to pursue this case. We believe we will successfully prove that Ringling
Bros. engages in ongoing abuse of the elephants during the separation process
of babies from their mothers, and in the training of elephants to perform"
stated Lisa Weisberg, senior vice president of Government Affairs and Public
Policy at the ASPCA. "We think that the public deserves to know the
truth about what goes on under the 'Big Top'" continues Michael Markarian,
President for The Fund for Animals. Cathy Liss, President for the Animal
Welfare Institute concludes, "Elephants including babies have suffered
greatly at the hands of Ringling Brothers, our lawsuit simply seeks to stop the
torture."
The groups are represented in the case by the public interest law firm of Meyer
& Glitzenstein. Ms. Katherine Meyer argued the case for the
appellants.

Dairy Council's
"3-A-Day" Fraud
The
National Dairy Council is launching a massive PR campaign called
"3-A-Day" to promote consumption of dairy products (see www.3aday.org
). Unlike their "milk mustache" and other PR campaigns, this one is
also likely to cause confusion with the National Cancer Institute's highly
successful "5 A Day" and thereby reduce consumption of vegetables and
fruits.
The Produce for Better Health Foundation, which runs the "5 A Day"
campaign, is acutely aware of this and has undertaken a diplomatic effort to
get the NDC to desist. We offered our help, but were asked to hold off to give
diplomacy a chance. The effort has been unsuccessful, ads for the
"3-A-Day" campaign have already appeared in national magazines, and a
major PR launch is scheduled for March 3.
The PBHF has now requested our help, and we plan to comply. Specifically, we
are launching a major media campaign and a letter-writing campaign to
supermarkets asking that they not participate in the "3-A-Day"
campaign.
If anyone is interested in participating or offering ideas for combating this
fraudulent campaign, please contact FARM at farm@farmusa.org

In The Name Of Food
By WantNoMeat@aol.com
Our habit requires that blood be shed
so to slaughter the cattle head
Men with prods and a whip
pack them in trucks for one last trip
Inside they struggle for fresh air
the horror is seen in their stare
Made to suffer in the cold or heat
just because we call them meat
The last stop, the slaughter grounds
where they'll be reduced to simple pounds
From their journey they are wore
but they must endure even more
Down the ramp they slip and slide
with no place for the injured to hide
Forced, they enter the winding coral
so large and wide they scrape the rail
They don't yet know where they are led
or what is waiting in the killing shed
Pushed along like a food machine
they follow each other until the death is seen
To look ahead at each who fell
the nearing doom a caustic smell
Moved along, the one ahead drops
in utter terror, he rears and stops
Racing heart, wide eyed with fright
the panic sets in at the sight
Now he knows the path to his fate
begins right here at this bloody gate
If only this were a mistake
but the final step he was forced to take
Behind him the gate will close
all because of the food we chose
A captive bolt placed on his head
stunned he falls but he's not dead
The assembly line begins here
where billions come every year
In this room of bloody stains
a single back hoof is attached to chains
Off the ground his body is flung
to await the knife he is hung
But he wakes up, this isn't rare
and he's too much for one leg to bare
Tendons tear and bones break
he swings and struggles for life's sake
Ghastly terror and unrelenting pain
his screams and bellows are in vain
Men unfeeling to his brutal strife
slice him open with a knife
His body quivers, blood pours out
a simple meal it's all about
One last gasp as he's bled
his anguish over, now he's dead
