Animal Rights 2003 West
By Greg Lawson - ParkStRanger@aol.com

Animal Rights 2003, a conference presented by the Farm Animal Reform Movement, took place in Los Angeles between August 1 and 6. Alex Hershaft and his staff did a great job of running this event. Steve Best and I were two of the more than one hundred speakers. Also in attendance were three other friends from El Paso. We were referred to as the delegation from Texas. We met several other vegans and activists from the lone star state. Texas was well represented.

It was a wonderful week of workshops, speeches and vegan food during which we shared our experiences with newcomers to the movement, learned from others, made new friendships, renewed old ones, recharged our batteries and gained a few pounds. When it's an all you can eat vegan buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner, you tend to go back for seconds.

Every day, from 9am until 5pm, we had to select which workshops we wanted to attend of four different ones presented every hour. After dinner, the evening speeches went until 10pm, then there was a party with a band and the late night all you could eat free buffet. It's a good thing I dieted for a couple of weeks before this conference.

I was really impressed by a workshop in which Carol Adams discussed some concepts from her book Living Among Meat Eaters, which I highly recommend. One of the basic ideas from the book, which she shared with the workshop attendees, is that meateaters are just blocked vegetarians. Once you realize that, it becomes much easier to deal with the teasing we vegans and vegetarians often face. Blocked vegetarians are operating from a sense of guilt, and joking about our eating habits is a way for them to avoid dealing with the fact that they eat animals. If you are provoked by meateaters, read Carol's book, it has many insights.

Steve Best gave a very good evening talk. Several people told me what a great speaker he was and someone specifically quoted to me the best lines from that speech: "What we owe to the animals is this....that we restore their habitat and then leave them the (expletive deleted) alone." It was obvious from the audience's applause and cheering that they agreed with him.

I was fortunate to give four talks, two about the annual slaughter of the bison of Yellowstone, and how, as a National Park Service Ranger, I am very concerned about this issue. One of my talks was about the Vegetarian Society of El Paso in a workshop called Running a Local Group. My fourth talk was about Animal Rights Online, my work as a journalist for ARO, and the program ACT Radio, Animal Concerns of Texas that Steve Best and I do. That workshop also featured Bob Linden who has been doing Go Vegan Radio in Los Angeles for the last two and a half years.

Three of the most enjoyed speakers were Bill Maher of Politically Incorrect and Real Time on HBO, actress Linda Blair, and the first vegan democratic candidate for President of the United States, Dennis Kucinich. It is said that Dennis is the only vegan member of congress. It's difficult to believe that there is only one vegan member of congress. Dennis delivered a fiery speech and was granted more than two standing ovations. It was an incredible experience for all who attended. It is a thrilling idea that such a progressive thinker (and a vegan) is so close to becoming the leader of our country. I am also sure that it was an incredible experience for Dennis, to be so enthusiastically received by a roomful of hundreds of people who share his concern for animals and so overwhelmingly support him.

It's hard to describe the depth of emotions I felt, being with 700 other vegans, vegetarians and animal advocates for a week. It was something I will remember forever, sharing the stage with leaders of the animal rights movement. I laughed a lot, I smiled most of the time.

I only cried three times, once for joy at arriving there, once during a slide show of the bile extraction from black bears in China for Chinese medicine, and once again, when it was over, when I landed at the El Paso airport.
............................
I wanted to share a bit of Dennis Kucinich's speech with you which I transcribed from a tape. You can learn more about Dennis at Dennis Kucinich for President Campaign, 2004 - Official Website http://www.kucinich.us/

From his speech at Animal Rights 2003 West...

"We recognize that we are in a world which truly needs compassion, that we need to extend compassion to one another and to everything living. And that our cause can truly be to lift up this world from a condition of suffering and cruelty to all the creatures of this planet, and through elevating the cause of every creature, we elevate our own humanity.

We lift up the cause of humanity by reaching out and connecting with all things living. It is our sense of interconnection with all living things that brings us to respect the rights of animals, that we understand that animals are not to be lower than, that animals should not have less of a claim to existence, less of a claim to the possibility of survival, less of a claim to dignity.

And your commitment translates into specific action, in raising the questions that must be raised about the use of animals in research, in raising the questions that must be raised about the use of animals in testing, in looking at the conditions in which animals are placed on farms, in challenging a corporate ethic which sees animals as things to be exploited and not beings which in and of themselves have some basic rights.

Your presence here serves as a reminder to this country that our presence on this planet has a higher calling. That we can through our activism, make light in this world, that we can through our activism, lift up the cause of the humblest beings, that we can through our activism, open up not only our own hearts, but the hearts of people everywhere so that our society can become more compassionate, so that our society can be more loving, so that our society can create policies which are caring for animals.

Everyone of us knows a story of animal cruelty, everyone of us knows how in one way or another official policies have sanctioned cruelty to animals. I will work with you, to put compassion into action in our policies with respect to animals in this country and I will work with you to have America set a higher standard, not only for this country, but for the world, to make sure that all of God's creatures, that all animals are given a chance to have dignity in our society and are given a chance to experience the appreciation they should have as living beings."

Tiger Fleet

Over the last two and a half years that it has crisscrossed the United States, SHARK's Tiger video truck has proven itself to be the most effective weapon of compassionate and nonviolent direct action in the animal protection movement. The Tiger has graphically exposed a long and still growing list of animal abuses, including but not limited to rodeos, bullfighting, slaughterhouses, the fur industry, Korean dog torture/slaughter, dolphin slaughter, circuses and most recently, shoemaker Adidas' support of the mass-murder of kangaroos in Australia.

The Tiger followed the Olympic torch across the country, educating hundreds of thousands of people about the cruelty of rodeos. The Tiger has sent fur wearers literally running to escape responsibility for their theft of the skins of others. The Tiger has already created enough public pressure to force uncaring administrators at Baylor University in Waco, Texas to make certain improvements in the way the school cares for its live bear "mascots," and the truck will go on to make more changes in this area, where animals have been typically considered mere possessions to be used, abused and discarded.

The beauty of the Tiger is that it can expose any type of abuse in a way that is highly targeted, completely unedited, and very, very hard-hitting. People do not have to visit a Website or come to a meeting. The Tiger goes to people where they work, play, shop, worship or whatever. Unless someone is hidden within a windowless cell, they are likely in Tiger territory. Unfortunately, there is only one Tiger truck.

It is a mystery to me why the animal protection movement has not jumped on the effort to bring the message of compassion out to the uninformed masses. Only one other truck close to the scale of the Tiger has been built, and interestingly it was again by a small organization run by lawyer Lori Peterson in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Although SHARK applauds the use of smaller vans as display vehicles by smaller organizations, the movement needs the "heavy weaponry" represented by a large Tiger-type vehicle.

I find the lack of forward momentum in this area to be indicative of a lack of leadership, dedication and commitment. Hundreds of millions of dollars come into this movement every year. Yet, a tiny fraction of that money at best goes to bring our message from the animal rights conferences and meetings, out to the masses. This is unacceptable. There should be no higher priority than getting the issues and images of animal abuse out to the public. SHARK can wait no longer for others to pick up the ball. Therefore, I am proud and excited to announce SHARK's intent to build two more Tiger trucks, with completion expected before the end of the year. We also intend to upgrade the original Tiger to an even more effective and invincible weapon of nonviolence.

In making this announcement we are putting two different groups on notice: animal abusers and animal advocacy organizations. Animal abusers like Adidas, Baylor University, the Rodeo Mafia, etc., already know who we are and what the Tiger is, and now they can expect to see a lot more of both. However, every major animal protection group now must consider the following questions: if a small group like SHARK can build a fleet of these compassionate war machines, why haven't the (much) larger organizations already done so, and when will they start? Why doesn't this movement already have at least one video truck in each state?

We have somewhat jokingly named this building project the "Terminator Fleet" - T1, T2, and T3. One truck will be stationed on the West Coast, another will be kept on the East Coast, and one will be in the midsection of the country. We also anticipate excursions into Canada, and very likely Mexico.

This Terminator Fleet will strategically target, expose, and terminate various animal cruelty issues across North America. Nonviolent "Seek and Destroy" by way of public education is our battle plan. Additionally, we'll lead by example to expose and terminate the inefficiency and waste within the movement. We are going to make it very difficult for any sizable organization to NOT have a fleet of mobile display vehicles.

We know that the animal abusers will dig their own graves in the court of public opinion if we can just get the message out. Perhaps a greater lesson to teach now is to animal protectors, to show that we can nonviolently kick ass. If you aren't convinced, just watch us; SHARK is going to lead the way.

Now we must raise funds to build this Terminator Fleet. We also need a secure base of operations for the West Coast and East Coast Tigers, and good, mature, dedicated people to crew them. So many times I hear people talking about how they would do ANYTHING to help the animals. Really? Well, here is your chance!

We hope to have the new Tigers paid off within a couple years, and we then intend to build three more as quickly as possible -- for a total of six. In this effort, I am looking for very real support, as opposed to mere kind words. Money is what will pay for these trucks, not words. I am asking for the support of every person who understands the importance of bringing animal issues out to the public. I believe it is the only hope the animals have.

In closing, I encourage the leadership of the animal protection to take some real action. There are too many "talkers," and far too few "walkers" in this movement. I also encourage those who speak of the use of violence in what is supposed to be a compassionate, nonviolent movement to back off the rhetoric, and get to the real world, hard work of taking our message to the mean streets. That is where change is to be made.

If you really want to help animals, join in the effort to build the Terminator Fleet. Millions of lives are at stake. Failure is not an option.

Kindest regards,

Steve Hindi

In the last couple of years, some very generous donors have earmarked contributions for the second Terminator. Consequently, we have saved about 2/3 of the money for the construction of the next war machine. But we know this movement has very deep pockets. In fact, we could have already built a video truck in each state. The technology exists. The money certainly exists. Now it's time to make it happen. Help us finance T2 and T3 so we can order three more Terminators next time.

Animal Protection Organizations Worldwide
Unite To Stop Slaughter of Canadian Seals

WASHINGTON (August 15, 2003) – Animal protection and environmental conservation groups from around the world - led by The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) - today joined in unified worldwide opposition to the Canadian commercial seal hunt.

As one of its first actions, the international coalition of animal protection groups signed a full-page advertisement in today’s New York Times asking readers to contact the Canadian government and voice their opposition to the seal slaughter. Over the next three years, The HSUS and its supporters will attempt to raise $3 million or more to finance additional advertising to galvanize public opinion and end the seal hunt. Canada has announced it will allow the legal slaughter of almost 1,000,000 seals, most aged 12 days to 12 weeks over the next three years.

In addition to The HSUS, the groups include, the Animal Protection Institute (API), the Bellerive Foundation, the Born Free Foundation, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), the International Wildlife Coalition (IWC), The Fund for Animals, Respect for Animals, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and three branches of Humane Society International. Collectively the groups represent tens of millions of members and constituents worldwide.

“This unites the global animal welfare community in the strongest possible opposition to the needless and inhumane killing of Canadian seals,” said John W. Grandy, Ph.D., HSUS senior vice president for wildlife and habitat protection. “We intend to use the power of our collective voice to expose the Canadian government’s callous disregard for the lives of these innocent creatures. The slaughter must end.”

The HSUS launched the new “Protect Seals: Do Something” campaign in June following a decision by the Canadian government to increase the annual seal killing quote to 350,000 seals. The campaign includes a major advertising blitz, a letter and e-mail writing effort targeted at the Canadian government to express opposition to the seal hunt, and a web site, www.protectseals.org, to educate consumers on the seal hunt and facilitate campaign activities.

According To Rebecca Aldworth of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), first hand observer of the hunt this past spring, “It is an unbelievably cruel massacre. An independent veterinary panel, including two participants from the United States, concluded that up to 42 percent of the seals they studied at the 2001 seal hunt were likely skinned alive. In addition, a significant number of seals are shot in open water and escape to die slowly under the ice, and these seals are not recovered or counted in official kill statistics – not a pretty picture.”

And, these are young seals. The Canadian government’s own statistics show that 95% of the animals killed in Canada’s seal hunt are “babies” aged less than three months. “What happens on the ice is nothing short of shocking,” said Dan Morast of the International Wildlife Coalition. “This is the largest hunt of marine mammals anywhere in the world and it simply cannot be justified or defended.”

Even more disturbing is the fact that the Canadian government provides millions of dollars of subsidies to the sealing industry. “In fact, there is little about the sealing industry that is self-sustaining,” said David Phillips, executive director of Earth Island Institute’s Marine Mammal Project. “Subsidizing an industry that only operates for a few weeks a year and creates only the equivalent of 100-150 full-time jobs is simply a bad investment on the part of the Canadian government and, frankly does a tremendous disservice to the sealers. Canada owes them a better future.”

“This travesty is of major concern to all of us who seek a better world for animals,” said Michael Kennedy, director, Humane Society International – Australia.” Most of the world believed this hunt was a thing of the past and when Canada announced last spring that it would kill over one million seals over the next three years, the world community of animal protection organizations was stunned.”

“For a country of Canada’s stature and reputation to be associated with this cruelty is truly monumental. Does Canada really expect people to vacation there if this hunt continues?” asked Michael Markarian, president of The Fund for Animals.

The HSUS is the nation's largest animal protection organization with over seven million members and constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals, wildlife, animals in research and farm animals and sustainable agriculture. For nearly 50 years, The HSUS has worked to protect all animals through legislation, litigation, investigation, education, advocacy and field work. The non-profit organization is based in Washington, DC and has 10 regional offices across the country. For more information, visit The HSUS’ Web site – www.hsus.org. Humane Society International is the international arm of The Humane Society of the United States. It is represented by three principal affiliates: Humane Society International- Australia, Humane Society International-Asia, and Humane Society International-U.K.

Memorable Quote

“We use a method (vivisection) which continues to lead to terrible mistakes, which kills thousands of people...none of which can be predicted under animal laboratory conditions...I have had talks with many doctors and scientists, who are perfectly
convinced that animal testing is dangerous, not only for the animals, but also, and most of all, for human beings...It is only, I believe, by consolidating the link-up of doctors against animal experiments with lawyers and politicians that we have a fair chance of achieving real progress.”
