During the second year of his residence at Vimanmek, the King had a group of traditional Thai-style wooden houses built on the
opposite side of the 'Jade Basin to the octagonal end of the west wing of Vimanmek.

It was his expressed wish to use this group of houses for same the non-royal style of living as that of a commoner. Here, he ceceived the
numerous acquaintances that he had made on his frequent incognito tours of the Kingdom. The guests, most of whom were commoners,
dined on dishes prepared by the King himself and by the members of the Royal Family. The dishwashers were none other than the
highest-ranking members of the nobility.
