The country known as Zambia
Zambia in a nutshell:
Zambia is a sub-saharan African nation of around 9 million people. It's two greatest natural resources are it's game reserves (some unrivalled) and large copper ore deposits. These should have been enough to ensure that Zambia would have grown into a thriving African economy after independence, but for a variety of reasons, external and internal (which I will not attempt to go into here) it is now one of the poorest countries in Africa, and indeed the world. It has high unemployment, especially in the formerly thriving copper mining region, a rampant AIDS virus, and a crippling national debt burden, amongst a cocktail of other problems. But amongst this there is hope, peace, and a real colourful african passion.

Encyclopedia entry - As much as online Encarta will tell you about Zambia, without you subscribing.
Zambia online - Zambia's national homepage. Good for general information and a few links links.
Zambia! - Sid's Zambia page. Loads more information and links, good for news especially.
Lusaka Lowdown - The essential monthly guide to Lusaka and what's happening in Lusaka (or so all the expratriates assure), published in its entirety here on the net. Good for potholes.
The Post - The most (politically) independent Zambian newspaper.
Lonely planet guide, Zambia - Travellers advice on Zambia. BUT CAUTION: Don't be scared by what a few of the reports seem to say here about Zambia (I spent 11 months around Lusaka - all parts - and travelling Zambia, and with due vigilance I never had a single problem. The contrary occurred during the 6 hours I reluctantly spent in one renowned South African city) I nearly didn't include this link on principle, but I did find the books invaluable for their practical information (if not all their opinions) whilst travelling.
