ABOUT THE BADGER GROUP...... |
![]() |
As a group we are dedicated to the protection of one of Britain's most intriguing and beautiful animals. Sadly they are also one of the most persecuted. We are responsible for surveying the area in and around Harrogate, and recording the badger activity there. We also work in partnership with the RSPCA to protect badgers as a population from death on the roads, and by the hands of the illegal badger diggers that we encounter all too frequently. Lamping, snaring, digging, and baiting is estimated to cause the death of around 10,000 badgers* each year in Britain. This causes a dent in an already fragile population. In the Harrogate area itself the population of badgers is recovering from disturbances that took place in the 60's and 70's, but we don't expect ever to haver a large population. In some parts of the country, badgers have already disappeared. As a group we are lucky enough to have holding pen facilities, enabling us to treat sick and injured badgers found on the roads, and in the countryside. It is only by your help and co-operation that we can treat these animals, and we need you to keep up the good work! (see "How you can help"). Badgers face an uncertain future as we head into the 21st century with the ever increasing threat of reduced habitat through extensive new building projects, but with your help we can ensure that the badger is given the best possible chance in the new millenium. |
