So far away

Everything that’s beautiful is far away
   so far off from here,
never where you are today
always out of reach
receding as we procede

Looking, we discover nothing,
gazes fixed on far off sights
eyes blind to the now,
we miss the jewels laid at our feet
as we run for the promises of far away

We escape in any way we can
computer and television screens
hopeless Lotto dreams
the dreamy emotion of Ecstasy

Hiding ourselves from ourselves
Running from each other
The rich avoid the poor
While the poor prey on one another

Everything that’s beautiful is far away
As near as your friend
Close as tomorrow, or the next day
Distant as the next second

But nothing comes to those who wait
Don’t listen to those who caution
That we need our generous parasites
We can’t leave the future to fate

The journey to beauty must begin
For our bones rot while we sit still
Beauty and freedom must be taken
Take that first step or no one will
