Homo Automobilus

Holdens vs. Fords, remember the jackets?
future consumer loyalties were forged
as little Brockies and Dicks raced each other
revelling in the horsepower that would be bought

The growling engine of an older brother's V8
this was something to brag about
spoilers, sports stripes and shiny turbochargers
these were all objects of the young mates' shouts

teach them early
the car is your masculinity
the V8 is divinity
Holden, Brock and Commodore
the Holy Trinity
insert your savings in a car
driving fast is your destiny

insults are hurled at inferior technology
don't denigrate the wondrous automobile,
your worth will be dictated by your horsepower
kids are nothing if they don't have wheels

teach them early
hide the results of crippling liberation
discount the cost of your manipulation
centralise us into frustration
tell us there's no other way
all this builds a car-loving nation

build the highways and they will come
and you can bet they'll come by car
