Bear 1
What is man without the beasts?
If all the beasts were gone,
men would die from great loneliness of spirit.

Grizzly? Brown Bear?

Both brown and grizzly bears are the same bear, "Ursus arctos". Americans tend to call the brown bear which lives in the interior, a grizzly, to distinguish it from the brown bears which live in coastal areas. The name "grizzly" comes from the silver tipped grizzled hairs that these brown bears develop as they get older. The important thing is that whether someone calls it a brown bear or a grizzly bear, it is the same bear.

The brown bear is a large mammal whose size and weight vary depending on the availability of food and climate. Generally, adult brown bears stand approximately three to four feet tall when on all fours and have a approximate body length of just over six to seven feet. They can weigh from 350 to 825 pounds.

Males within a geographic area may weigh more than twice as much as females. The lifespan of brown bears in the wild can be 25 years or more.

THE BLACK BEAR

Black Bears feed on animals, ranging in size from insects to large mammals, as well as on plant material, carrion, and garbage. In Autumn, these bears gain weight and retreat into dens under fallen trees, in caves, or other protected areas. There they sleep for several months, living off stored fat. Black Bears are not true hibernators; their body temp does not drop drastically, and occasionally they wake up and wander away from their den. Cubs are born about the end of January while the females are still in their den. The cubs> are small...a black bear baby weighs only about a half pound at birth.
