Traveling further north on the same main road we came to the end of this road for rental cars, as the roads become more trecherous and isolated. Waipio Valley cuts the island's access off with it's steep volcanic slopes. Covered in lush growth it's beauty only disguises it's treachery as even locals have been known to perish attempting to drive down the mandatory 4-wheel drive vehicle road. At the edge of the valley the ocean reaches it's blacksand beach and the deep azure of the Pacific Ocean laps a lace of white water along the breaking waves that we can admire from only atop the valley's edge.
