In Northern California, one corporation
and one company dominate the economy. Corporate Raider
Charles Hurwitz and his MAXXAM Corp. took over the Pacific
Lumber Co. in the mid-eighties, and ever since have been
ravaging the region's hillsides and forest lands. In 1997,
a resulting landslide obliterated eight houses in the tiny
town of Stafford. Yet PL continues to assault the hillside
above Stafford with its relentless industrial logging
operations. Julia "Butterfly" Hill and other Earth First!
activists have been defending the town and the forest for
almost two years in what is now the longest tree sit in U.S.
history. Since December, 1997, Julia has remained 180 feet
aloft in one of the hillside's majestic ancient redwood
trees, which has been named Luna. Julia did not once set foot
on the ground in 1998.
