---The tobacco catches and I puff furiously. Damn nonfilters just didn't light the same as my Kool's.  The mist rolls in as I turn and survey the scene---

Every writer writes within himself--that is, confined to the culture he has embraced--not been raised on, for the few it does not pertain to who have risen above blind, ignorant, innocent eyes.  As such, each piece of literature is written by that culture.  Thus how can we, as readers, informed/competent/educated readers, ignore this base ground for the story?  How can we ignore the teachings of our childhood inherent in the work before us?  Even subtle messages locked away--we understand that reasoning acting independant of consciousness...We cannot escape ourselves and the self created by the culture, so why attempt interpretation removed from our culture and the author's?  To do so would remove from the work the tone, for where else would our politics be contained except for in the voice of the authro?  I cite cynicism and sarcasm and happiness as an example!
