"While Frank Sinatra sings Stormy weather
The flies and spiders get along together"
My favorite Bay Area (well, north Cal) band just lost it's guitarist Greg Brown. He split b4 then got back in...oh dear, I'm so bummed--don't think he's coming back this time. SO there is that band I love, a vocalist, trumpet/ player, and a drummer...the bass guitar right now is not a "permanent member" of the band...oh dear oh dear.
The "Cake..." is an actual quote from the letter that tape came with...heh, another die hard PJ fan...standing there at that show, imagining PJ playing this small club in London '92...the "glory years" as far as I'm concerned--_Ten_ small club days....sigh what I wouldn't give to time warp back a few years to catch those small shows live...Sigh SIgh Sigh.
Coming home from gaming tonight (last night really--it's 1:13AM) I passed the local coffee shop near safeway...a band was playing and I stopped in to hear the last five minutes of their set..._Dave Hinz Band_...locals apparently...doign the coffee shop/pub route...most new and fresh, don't think they do vocals...maybe they do, guy seemed to have what could make a singing voice when I talked to him afterwards...he was taping the show on a cheapo microphone to an analog tape deck (which seemed like a good decent pro type model deck btw). I dug the tunes and asked him about that...said he was taping the shows to put out another demo (they did a 4song one on analog->CD) Told him I dug the music and would llike to DAT them when they play again tommorrow (tonight...gawd technically today but late at night seems like yesterday--is annoying!) and he was totally stoked about it--said he'd love me to do it and give him a copy for a better demo source...most cool--said he's putting me on the guest list! (waive $2 cover, which is kinda nice, two bucks is two bucks...) Said he'd pay for a copy and I told him $5 to cover the blank would be fine with me :)
I see myself sinking into a local music culture I hadn't dug into b4--it's cool to find music around here I can dig..that LoS show was great...Galactic should be awesome--heard so much good about 'em...acid jazz/funk...and music around here is small...heh catch 'em in the "glory years" i described above, heh.
Gaming went excellently...much fun. Just above finished homework. Must do laundry when I wake up!
Beginning to think I won't be borrowing jack butkiss for the PJ shows now...my line on the AKG 480b's just went out the window--guy sold his mics, and I highly doubt he'd loan out his B&K he's getting to replace them...very ***expensive*** microphones! Can't loan from Guitar Center in Walnut Creek--called them to ask and they said because of health reasons, can't return mics -- even though they knnow is wasn't sung into...they can't risk it :(Guy on the line tried to get me into AT 822's, but I don't lke those mics too much...although I *have* heard some decent things about them, and some decent tapes...
I'd rather just help a guy run his Schoeps that is going (very nice mics themselves--better than anything I can borrow from anywhere/anyone) get a killer tape outta that, and save a bunch of rental fees/hassles about using other people's equipment...
Still no call from MD...I'm sweating it now...
Leaving the 18th of Feb...staying in an airport hotel room in SFO where I can leave my car while I'm in Maui..splitting the cost with a friend...fly out Thursday feb 19th at 8AM, hit Maui 11:AM( i think...maybe later, not sure abou time diffs and flight times...well i think it's four hours...) Go out hit clubs that night, see the island a little, sleep--do whatever Maui stuff Friday until the show/sndchck...see the show, watch Mudhoney play brand new material not yet released. See PJ blow my cream outta my testicles with their set/new songs that will be *just* released in 3 more days! ahhhhhhhh....less than three weeks before I shave my head and get rid of all this fucking hair! YEAH! Long hair is getting to be a drag I will admit...too much time in the shower--besides I like the idea of a new look...out with the long haired "rocker" image and in with a more fitting "fuck off" skinhead look (just kidding...just wanted to try something wild...."I fear I'm running out of time...around 25, 'wild' becomes immature" And you can spot this quote, EMAIL ME! I need to know that somone reading knows!!! PLEASE!!! Now I'm almost on my knees begging! gv1@axe.humboldt.edu Thank you for your support! (especially since I might have screwed up a word or too! jeesh)
Then another night of this crazy feel good emotion I get with PJ on stage + Mudhoney to pump me up again! Then I catch a last bit of Maui, and fly home--back to school, back to life, back to reality.
Everything is well here Dad ;) School is doing rather well.
And now I am happy because my life shall, in less than 24 hours, be directly furthering the progress of art, the development of a group, a contribution to the saving grace of our fucked up society--that it's ills spawn stories, and pain, and music/art/creativity/imagination...to take us all away and make it all better for a while...because a perfectly lawfull good world would bore me...no reason to escape...no need for art, for music...where would I fit it such a world? As I see myself now, I just plain would *not*.
Maybe that's why I am a big proponent of Anarchy as an idea---much like Marxism as well--the art it shall inevitably *force* into creation...great idea, beautifull on paper, horrible in practice...we could not handle anarchy...life would be nomad like, small fringe dwellers--_Mad Max_ kind of life--just without Mad Max as a cop...not a pretty picture to paint, is it?
But I am being a good "cultural hero" as the New York Times put it a few weeks/months(?) ago...I need to find that articel--maybe it is online somewhere, or somone on Datheads saved it to their hard drive...maybe I'll put it here if I can find it...leave it as a quote for a while...
I must go to the url on the flyer Dave Hinz gave me...check out their site now...I'm thinking it would be possible to do a multiple track recording for them...unfortunetly one source only will be dat...heh, maybe I could bring my home Deck...Call the brew pup and ask them to ask Dave Hinz when he comes in...or just bring it and see when I get there...I haven't set the core sounds back yet....could try using them--being carefull and trying to get it to work...four mics means four mic positions, means individual mics for most of the instruments...saxophone, flute, guitar, percussion...boom, right there....just a question of power for the home deck, really. they have four tracks to work with in the studio then....could make some killer demo stuff that way I suppose
The band is also playing a gig next thursday--maybe I go to that one too if I can swing my homework around it...that gig thursday is about 4 blocks away from my apt (tonights was about the same distance--the next one tonight/tommorrow is in Eureka, a 10 minute drive...
Five years ago, given this opportunity, I would say it was a possible career decision...I've regretted a little my involvement in this so "late" in my college career...too late for that option now. Maybe someday I could dabble a bit more in it...after I've made my wishfull millions and no longer need to work...*sigh* I could use being rich right now. Can't we all?
And i just realized tuesday--galatic, is the same night as open mic at the Jambalya. Fuck...means missing some premiers of my recent poetry--I mised the one for jan too when I was in the bay area. Oh well, I think galatic would be a better choice anyway. Life is a bitch...maybe I can catch the tail end of the open mic and get on the list after the galactic show...maybe...I need to contain myself and concentrate on homework first though. I can't let myself get swept away right now. As it is I barely have enough dat tape to use for these shows here...must wait until I know I have a job b4 I can afford any more...it's a minimum $40 for a box of ten decent qual blakes...for just trading...for mastering I would need different quality that are slighly more expensive...about $50 a box of ten...but do you care abou dat prices? probably not. sorry.
QUICK! if you happen to be a pot smoker and your short term memory is shot--scroll back up to the quote and try to figure the source of it out! Then send me email. I love email from strangers
I'm leaving you off to your other favorite journal reading
