Ikari Shinji:

"Third Children", pilot of Evangelion Test Type Unit-01 (EVA-01, Shogouki). His mother died when he was young, and he has also been living apart from his father for 10 years. Was asked suddenly asked by his father to come to Tokyo-3, and thrust into the position of pilot, mostly against his will. 14 years old, since no Evangelion pilots can be older then 14. Showed uncommon skill in piloting Unit-01 without any prior training. Has a very depressive nature and tends to try to avoid reality and the pain that can be associated with it. Ironically, his mantra is "I musn't run away".

Ayanami Rei:

"First Children", pilot of Evangelion Prototype Unit-00 (EVA-00, Zerogouki). Seems to have been raised and trained specifically and only for piloting EVA. Was heavily injured in an accident during Unit-00 activation test and is still in cast and bandages in the first episode of the series. Silent, and either almost emotionless or unnable to recognize and express her emotions. Has piercing red eyes, odd blue hair and a pale complexion.

Sohryu Asuka Langley:

"Second Children", pilot Evangelion Production model Unit-02 (EVA-02, Nigouki). 3/4 German blood, 1/4 Japanese, but her nationality is American. Very arrogant and competitive, she pilots for her own glory and losing is not an much of an option to her. Has the highest synchronization rate at the beginning of the series. A child prodigy who has graduated from university before coming to NERV. In Tokyo-3, lives with Shinji and Misato.

Katsuragi Misato:

NERV HQ Tactics-Operations Dept. Operation Office Sect 1, Section-Chief. The immediate superior of Shinji, and also his guardian and roommate. Captain at the beginning of the series, later promoted to Major. Heavy drinker, can't cook (edible food) and can't clean. Cares a lot for the Children, especially Shinji.

Ikari Gendo:

Supreme Commander of NERV, an organization under the United Nations that exists for the purpose of investigating / researching / annihilating the beings called "Angels". Also responsible for the development of the Evangelions. Father of Ikari Shinji. Very secretive and very cold. To him, everyone seems like tools to use, his own son included.

Akagi Ritsuko:

Head of Project-E (the Evangelion development project). Has known Misato since both were students. A beautiful lady who is cool and intellectual. One of the world top scientist. Can be very cold, detached and unsympathetic. Her mother, Akagi Naoko created the MAGI Super-computer system.
