Kellam Chandler was a wealthy politician
who arrived in Salem in 1979. Kellam was a ruthless politician who got
whatever he wanted, and this time he wanted Marlena Evans-Craig. Marlena
and her husband, attorney Don Craig, were happily married and awaiting
the birth on their first child. Kellam decided to push his plan to win
Marlena’s heart, and offered Don a job with the Chandler corporation, so
he could control Don. Marlena and Don both helped out of Kellam’s campaign
and were always at all lavish parties that he threw, though Marlena was
beginning to have uneasy feelings about him.
Marlena delivered her child prematurely
and everything seemed to be fine, but a couple months later, while Don
was having dinner with Liz, Marlena found their child dead in his crib.
The baby, DJ, died of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Their marriage
came tumbling down after that, for Don blamed Marlena for not taking good
enough care of herself during her pregnancy , which resulted in the baby
being born prematurely.
During that time. Don had also
cheated on Marlena with Liz Chandler, Kellam's daughter. Marlena found
this out and heart broken she threw Don out of their apartment. The two
almost reconciled until Marlena took a job working with Kellam and Don
told her to quit because he was the D.A and it would appear to be a conflict
of interest. When Marlena refused, Don once again moved out. Soon after
that, Marlena and Don divorced.
Kellam’s interest in Marlena was
getting stronger and stronger. Marlena passed of his advances and went
about business. Kellam began to take a great interest in Johnny, Marlena’s
foster child, at the time and he also made sure that Marlena found out
that Don was still seeing Liz. Kellam kissed Marlena but she once again
passed it of as an innocent birthday kiss. Kellam then asked Marlena to
be his wife when she refused he got angry, and Marlena left the office
and went home. Once she arrived at her apartment she changed and Settled
down for the night. Kellam followed her home and she opened the door when
he began banging on it, he forced his way into her apartment, she threatened
to call the police. He grabbed her wrist and began yelling at her, she
broke free of his grasp and ran towards the bedroom. Kellam followed her
and forced his way inside. Marlena began screaming as she tried to fight
him off but he slapped her and threw her on the bed. He tore at her cloth
and sloppily kissed her. Marlena was crying hysterically and screaming.
He got very violent and he raped her violently.
When he was threw he left the apartment.
Marlena could barely stand up and when she did she tried to call Don but
Liz answered his phone so she hung up. She then called her friend Joshua
and unknown to her Joshua killed Kellam. A few weeks later Marlena testified
at the trial for the murder of Kellam that she saw him the night of his
murder. At that time only Marlena and Joshua knew of what Kellam had done
to Marlena. She had to tell the court and Don who was prosecuting the case
of the rape. She broke into tears and with a trembling, almost stammering
and hysteric tone, she told the court about the rape.
Mickey took Marlena home and offered her comfort she asked him to leave, Marlena was traumatized from the action of the rape. Don came to see Marlena but again she wanted to be alone. Eventually Marlena told Don the could never get back together because if he hadn't moved out then she never would have been raped. It took Marlena years to get over that night and when she first got involved with Roman Brady she shied away at first due to her past experience with men. Roman helped Marlena work through that time which began their romance!
