VIETNAM
These are the kind of houses I picture when I think of Indochina or when I read Marguerite Duras. They are common in Laos and Vietnam, and even in Cambodia. They give me a sense of peace and familiarity, maybe because they remind me somewhat of Bucharest, where I grew up.
Dragon fruit! This is it! Remember I wrote to you in an email how excited I was when I first discovered it? i miss it so much now, just looking at the pictures makes my mouth water!
Saigon traffic. A little intimidating at first, especially when you're going through a rotary by bicycle, and cars, mopeds and everything else pass a hairbreadth away from you on each side. But eventually you just learn that the best thing to do is not to do anything, especially anything sudden. People go around you like river water around an obstruction. I thought that traffic in Saigon could provide some great examples for fluid flow theory....
Here's a fruit stall with dragon fruit, mangoes, pears, longan, melon and other foodies goodies. Yum!
I think this was in Hanoi.
