1925 Morris Cowley

The above picture is of Bill and Laura Bedford standing next to one of their first cars, a 1925 Morris Cowley. This photo was taken in 1934 when the couple was only 20 years of age. The car had lots of classic features some of which were :
* A Brass radiator,
* A Thermometer showing the engine temperature in the front of the bonnet,
* A Bulb horn,
* One side door to enter vehicle,
* No Front brakes,
* A gravity fed petrol system (No pump),
* A starting handle & battery for starting the engine,
* Wooden spoke wheels,
* A spare wheel on the running board,
* A fold up bonnet,
* A magneto spark and a "dicky" made for two people.

Bill even says today that the car NEVER let him down. He sold it in part exchange for a lorry and although he didn't regret buying the lorry, he did regret selling the car. When he owned the car all he had in his toolbox was a pair of pliers and a hammer and although never claiming to know much about mechanics he said that he could have kept it going.

Another interesting fact about this car is that it carried a two gallon petrol can, because there were no garages between Ramsey and Peterborough and if you didn't have a can with you the garage used to charge you for a new can everytime which proved to be very expensive.

Bill is now one of more elderly of the community and is still respected by everybody in the town. Bill spent his days as one of the local agricultural farmers of the town and remembers the days when he was in his fields ploughing with his horses. He farmed alot of land "The hard way", and used his own lorry to deliver his sugarbeet early in the morning to the factory. As one of the original "Knights of the Road" and his life long devotion in what he does, he has well and truely earned the respect of the community.
