Rangers AFC have re-launched the club's website. The site has a new domain name and can be viewed at http://www.rangersafc.org.nz/. This site replaces the old oocities.com/rangersafc/ site. Please update your bookmarks and address books. If you are a webmaster, then please change (or add) the links from your website (sample code on Link to us page on the new site).

Due to the volume of pages on the old website, there will be a transitional period while lower level pages are transferred to the new domain and have their code updated. The new site has a better look/feel, the navigation has been updated to make it easier to find your way to the information you require.

Death notice: Bryan Ives died last week.
Bryan was father of Rangers' mens reserve team manager, Rick Ives. Bryan was son of the late life member, George Ives. Bryan's involvement with Rangers included: Senior Management Committee 1979, 1989; Vice-President 1988-89, 2001-02; Mens Div 1 Manager 1985; Womens Div 2 Coach 1976; Junior Club Captain 1986-87; Junior Management Committee 1986-87, 1989.

Kassia Ford has been awarded Rangers womens first team Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year awards, with Davinia Miller awarded Most Consistent Player. The announcement of the award winners was delayed due to the team's participation (and winning a consecutive title) at the Nelson end-of-season knockout on the weekend of the club prizegiving.

Hue Frame has been named in the Canterbury United squad of 21 players for the 2006-07 national league.

Two Rangers womens first team players have been named in the Canterbury 16th grade rep squad for South Island Tournament: Amber Worrill, Chloe Williams.

At the Rangers Club prizegiving dinner, the Masters Division 1 side were in a celebratory mood having won the Masters Division 1 Cup, beating Halswell 1-0 in the Final. If there was an award for most improved team over course of a season, they would have been strong contenders, having had a horror losing start to the season, eventually finishing bottom of their league, despite a late rally.

The Colin Cook Trophy for the team that does most for the club was awarded to the Mens First Team, with Jack Humphries awarded the Presidents Tropy, the Atlas Trophy for the best performed team went to Barry's Presidents Bees, who won the Presidents C League, winning every game bar one (a loss to the other Rangers team in the grade).

The Mens First Team Player of the Year is Thomas Ward, who also won the Hawkey Trophy for First Team Players' Player of the Year and the First Team Most Improved Player. First Team Young Player of the Year (the Brian Lay Trophy) was awarded to Felix Grant, who also won the Ken Pash Trophy for U17 Player of the Year. First Team Top Goalscorer (Mike Hawkey Trophy): Hue Frame. The Alan Smith Trophy for Most Dedicated Back was given to Leon Taylor, who also captured Reserve Team player of the Year (Welford Trophy).

Details of Awards for Rangers' Womens teams have been embargoed due to Rangers' participation at a tournament in Nelson on this weekend. Winners will be announced following the later presentations.

Mike Harvey. Long serving Rangers stalwart, Mike Harvey, will be hanging up his first team boots at the conclusion of the current season. Harvey started playing for the first team in 1991 and has enjoyed 16 years with the squad and is now the most capped first team player for the club, having now played 354 senior games.

Career highlights have included memorable Chatham Cup runs, making the 1993 Chatham Cup Final and making the semi-final in 1995, as well as winning two English Cup medals, three Rangers Tournaments and the Hurley Shield. Having the opportunity to play with some great players over the years has also been a highlight, in addition to the friendships that have come out of playing football.

Rangers' 2-1 win over Technical yesterday and Avon's loss, 2-0 at Nelson Suburbs ensures that Rangers will have a place in the 2007 Mainland Premier League. The results mean that Avon United will play either Burnside or Richmond in the relegation playoff, while both New Brighton and Christchurch United are automatically relegated.

Barry's Rangers Bees have won the Presidents C grade. A 4-2 win at Woolston, coupled with second-placed University's 4-0 loss at Nomads, means that Rangers Bees have a 12 point lead with 3 matches remaining. The Bees have only failed to win once this season, gifting 3 points to the other Rangers team (the Dipsticks) in the grade.

Mens Division 3 picked up their first (non-deafult) point of the season with a 2-2 draw at Burnside, while Masters Division 1 defeated Cashmere 2-0 in the group stage of their Cup.

Womens second team lost their Division 1 Cup quarter-final 6-4 after extra time at Dux de Lux. Rangers led 4-3 with seven minutes left of the first 90 in a match where neither side took more than a 1 goal lead until the 113th minute.

Rangers women, despite a close loss (1-2), looked like a team on the up in the quarter-final of the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup. League-leaders Ferrymead Bays resorted to crude fouls in an attempt to stop Rangers getting a second goal which would have sent the tie into extra time. Some sloppy defending in the first half saw Bays take a 2-0 lead and Rangers' post was struck twice. However, a spirited second half performance inspired a Rangers fightback, with Erin Heine scoring for Rangers with a run and shot from the left. A 'tolerant' attitude from the referee seemed to encourage some rough tactics and numerous fouls from Bays, who were starting to panic. Bays' relief at the final whistle (that interrupted a series of Rangers set-pieces) was evident, although it was Rangers who emerged with more pride. If Rangers can play with the same spirit displayed in the sceond half (and last week's match) throughout the rest of the matches in the league season, then the top half of the table beckons.

Presumably due to ground conditions following this week's snow.

Get down to Cuthberts Green at 12.30pm Saturday and support our women as they try to upset league-leaders Bays in the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup quarter-finals.

On Saturday, Rangers moved 6 points clear of the Mainland Premier League relegation places with a 1-0 win at New Brighton. Pachalo Chinula scored 4 times to help Snow's to a 7-0 win over Avon United in Mens Division 2. In Womens Premier League, although league leaders Ferrymead Bays won 2-0, they were given a scare as it was only two concentration lapses and some poor finishing which denied Rangers from getting a result. The teams meet again this coming Saturday in the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup Quarter-Finals.

In the English Cup, Rangers will be away to the winner of Christchurch Boys High Scool v Nomads United, on a date yet to be determined.

In the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup, Rangers will be at home to Ferrymead Bays at Cuthberts 5, 12.30pm, Saturday 17 June.

In contrast to last month's Cup exits, both Rangers senior mens and womens teams have advanced in the Queen's Birthday first round of the English Cup and Reta Fitzpatrick Cup respectively. The mens team put on what according to spectators was an impressive performance winning 2-0 over Halswell United at Warren Park, with goals to Hue Frame and Tom Ward. Now their task is to get back to winning ways in the League, with a vital match at New Brighton (who are in the relegation playoff position and 3 points behind Rangers) this coming weekend.

In an earlier kick-off at Cuthberts Green, the womens team stumbled to a 1-1 draw with Burnside, which due to other results was enough to see both clubs through to the quarter-finals. Erin Heine opened the scoring for Rangers against her former club in the second minute to put Rangers ahead and Maisy Scott equalised with an own goal for her former club later in the first half. Raewyn Walker, the Rangers goalkeeper was called upon to make many saves in the second half. It was a far less impressive Rangers performance than last week's 9-0 League win over the same club.

On Saturday, Mens Division 2 were leading table toppers, Ferrymead Bays, 2-1 with a couple of minutes remaining but drew 2-2. Although Rangers are mid-table they are now only 3 points behind the second-placed side. In Presidents C, both Rangers teams had wins. The Bees (who continue to top the table) won 3-0 in Ashburton, second-half goals to Graeame Shepherd and a Joe Kearns double. The Dips had a 2-1 win over Technical. In Masters 4, the Spikes picked up another point with a 4-4 draw with Technical B.

Out of the Cups. Rangers went out of the Chatham Cup losing 2-1 at Nomads in the first round on the weekend. With Halswell also eliminated, it means that the first round English Cup meeting between Halswell and Rangers will now take place on Queen's Birthday Monday, June 5, 2.30pm at Halswell.

Reserve Cup holders, Rangers were also eliminated in the first round of their competition losing 3-1 at Burnside, the margin enough to see us miss out on one of the 'best loser' spots for the quarter-finals.

Womens Premiers were disappointed to draw 1-1 with Halswell, Rangers failing to despatch several second half chances.

Snows, in Mens Division 2, picked up another win, 4-0 over University Engineers. Barry's, Rangers Bees remain top of Presidents C with a 6-2 win at University, who scored the first goals against the Bees this season, the first within 30 seconds of the start of the match (at half-time it was 6-1). The second was claimed to be offside by the Rangers defenders. However, by that time Glen Senior (2), Joe Kearns, Jason Wells and Sanjay Chandran had got on the scoresheet for the Bees, who in their previous match thrashed last season's champions Cashmere 7-0. In Masters, the Spikes had their first win in Division 4 this season, 2-1 at Rangiora.

On Sunday, Womens Div 1 suffered another first half five minutes of madness conceding three goals in a match that they eventually lost 5-2 to Kaiapoi Town.

"Due to ground floodings and player saftey [sic] , CCC has advised Mainland Soccer that all grounds in Christchurch are withdrawn. This means there is no soccer for all senior mens, women, youth and juniors for Sat 13th May."

Mainland Soccer have announced that Rangers are away to Halswell United in the first round of the English Cup (date to be confirmed). Rangers get the opportunity to avenge their recent loss and play at Burnside in the Reserve Cup on 20 May. In the Reta Fitzpatrick Cup, Rangers women will have the chance to advance as on June 5 they host Burnside in the first round, where the 8 best of 10 move into round 2.

On Saturday, Rangers' unbeaten Mainland Premier League run came to an end with 3-1 loss at home to Nelson Suburbs. Byron Goodwin made his first league appearance for Rangers, coming off the bench to score. Unfortunately he was taken to hospital with a broken leg. The Reserves crashed 6-2 to Burnside at Cuthberts Green, despite having a 2-0 lead in the first half. Snow's picked up their first win for the season in Div 2 with a 3-0 win at Woolston. Barry's Rangers Bees maintained their winning run, with a 5-0 thrashing of Technical, marked by some goals from flowing passing moves and a Sanjay Chandran individual goal, where he juggled the ball before lobbing the keeper from distance. The Bees are yet to concede a goal this season, but face fellow table toppers (and last year's champions) Cashmere Wanderers this weekend. Womens Premiers moved off the bottom of the table despite not playing as Burnside lost to Bays to drop below Rangers on goal difference.

Rangers will play at Nomads United in the Round One of the Chatham Cup on May 20. Nomads today beat Cashmere Wanderers 10-0 in the Preliminary Round (Rangers had a Bye).

Rangers are unbeaten in the League this season after a 2-2 draw at Western on Saturday, in a match where Hue Frame and Andrew Ellis had given Rangers a 2-0 lead, but Western scored twice within the last seven minutes. The first team's only loss this year has been in a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner of the Rangers Tournament Final. The only other unbeaten senior team in the club are Barry's Presidents Bees, who with a 1-0 win over Halswell United at Eric Adam Park on Saturday are yet to concede a goal this year.

A 2-1 win over Christchurch United has moved Rangers to second in the Mainland Premier League, level on points with leaders Ferrymead Bays. Michael Hughes opened the scoring for Rangers after 4 minutes with a twenty yard smash into the top corner. Lee Hinton equalised for United shortly after half-time. Almost two years ago, on 17 April 2004, Mike Harvey scored from the halfway line in a 4-1 win at Eric Adam Park against Christchurch United. Today with around 20 minutes remaining, the Rangers captain did it again... well almost... Harvey scored the winner for Rangers today, but this time it was header from six yards from a Symon Beedles corner.

Despite dominating possession and chances, the Reserves somehow failed to score against Christchurch United in a 0-0 match at Eric Adam Park. Yorrick Goodwin squandered three (almost) point blank chances (save, post, wide) within 5 seconds after a Thomas Marsh shot following a great through ball from former Latvian full international Vitalijs Teplovs, was parried by the United keeper. Andrew Saunders had a header cleared off the line, and Rangers keeper Connor Chellew had only one save to make of note, a stinging shot which he flung himself at to push over the crossbar.

The Press is reporting that Rangers have drawn a Bye in the Preliminary Round of the Chatham Cup and will play away to the winner of Nomads United v Cashmere Wanderers in Round 1 on 20 May.

Rangers make a winning start to the 2006 Mainland Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over New Brighton. The Premier League will be reduced to 8 teams in 2007, with 2 automatically relegated and one to the play-offs this year, it is a vital year for all clubs. Rangers have made a satisfactory start with 2 Hue Frame goals providing a solid 3 points. Although the football was scrappy, Frame was composed as he slotted the first goal over the Brighton keeper with 15 minutes gone. His second came from the penalty spot after a Brighton player was adjudged to have handled five minutes into the second half. Rangers were comfortable winners, with Brighton's best chance coming in the first ten seconds, when Rangers gifted the ball to them from kick-off. The scoreline could have been expanded, if not for a couple of desperate Brighton goal-line clearances.

The Reserves are left contemplating what might have been, if they had taken some of their chances in a 1-2 loss to Brighton. Ryan Johnson scored seconds before the final whistle for Rangers, but many other chances should have been snapped up. Rangers goalkeeper Mark Sutcliffe was replaced early on after a knee injury. We hope it is not too serious.

Rangers are second in Womens Premier following a 2-2 draw at Burnside. Carrie Erkila got one for Rangers and Sarah O'Brien out-fought 2 opposing defenders to score the other Rangers goal.

In Presidents, Rangers Bees were gifted a default win over Burnside to take an early lead at the top of the table.

Western won the Rangers Tournament on a penalty shoot-out, after a 1-1 draw with Rangers in the Final. It was a disappointing failure (1-4) at penalties again for the hosts, who went out of both Cups last year on penalties - none of the three shoot-outs have even been close. Hue Frame is the only Rangers player to have scored in each of the three shoot-outs, with Mike Harvey the only other Rangers shoot-out scorer in the three. At least this time the opposition goalkeeper was forced to make saves for each non-scoring penalty. Blazej Wieclawski opened the scoring for Western shortly after half-time and Hue Frame equalised for Rangers. Tom Ward came close for Rangers shortly after, but the Western keeper tipped his shot over the bar. Neither side could break the deadlock in extra time. Rangers' player of the day deservedly went to Andy Grant. In the 3rd place play-off, Halswell United came from two goals down to beat Nomads United 3-2.

Aaron McGovern blasted a scorcher of a shot from almost 25 yards into the top corner to set Rangers on course for the Final of the Rangers Tournament. McGovern's strike after 20 minutes was added to by Byron Goodwin's late goal midway through a long period of injury time to give Rangers a 2-0 win over Halswell in the semi-final and to set up a meeting with Western at Eric Adam Park on Sunday at 3pm to decide the Tournament winner. Rangers put in a battling performance but were always on top, the lengthy injury time caused by a collision which left the host's keeper, Greg Brand and defender Mike Berry needing treatment. While Berry was subbed as precaution, it appears the extent of his injury was a cut and bump above his eye and lots of blood all over him.

Western, earlier in the evening, qualified for the Final with a 1-0 win over Nomads in the other semi. Although, at half-time, most neutral punters' money would have been on Nomads. With Western defender O'Neill sent off for 2 bookable offences in quick succession shortly before the break, and Nomads doing everything but score with a series of first-half assaults on the Western goal, the second half appeared to be Nomads for the taking. Nomads failed to take advantage and Western scored the game's only goal through Souchay Rattonong midway through the second half.

Rangers AFC vice-president, Keith Petrie passed away last night. Keith has been a loyal supporter at Rangers' matches, and along with Reg Johnson and the late George Ives, was part of the "Last of the Summer Wine", who were often seen at football grounds throughout Christchurch (especially if Rangers were playing).

The Tournament features the first teams of the top Christchurch non-National League clubs, and has two groups of four, with the top two in each group qualifying for the semi-finals.

The Tournament opens on Wednesday 22 February with Western playing against New Brighton in Group A, followed by a Group B match at 8pm where Nomads take on hosts Rangers. Bays and Technical are Rangers' other opponents in Group B, while Halswell and Christchurch United complete Group A.

All matches will be at Eric Adam Park (formerly known as Rangers Park). Matches will be on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays (but not each of these day every week, to avoid clashes with Canterbury United home matches). Weds and Thurs matches kick-off at 6.15pm and 8pm, while Sunday matches are 1pm and 3pm kick-offs. The semi-finals are on Wednesday 15 March, and the Final on Sunday 19 March (3.00pm).

The women’s second team who play in Division 1 are seeking a coach. This team were runners-up in the League in 2005, and won the Cup in 2004. They play some great football at times. Contact development officer Mike de Bono (03) 389-3007

Mainland Soccer have announced the squad for the National Youth League commencing 28 January. Included in the squad are Paris Kerdemelidis and Symon Beedles who both played for Rangers last year. Although the competition lasts for seven rounds, Mainland have only one match in Christchurch. It will take place on Sunday 12 February at Noon at English Park v Central, preceding the NZFC Canterbury United v Waikato FC match at 3pm.
