Super Bowl XXXVII

Sunday, January 26, 2003 was one of the happiest days of my life. Fans from Tampa Bay to Norway praised all that was holy as we watched the Buccaneers rout the Oakland Raiders 48-21. The 2002 season was a Cinderella-story that would have been a hard sell in Hollywood, so thank goodness it really happened! (Or did I dream the whole thing?)

Anyway, here are some highlights from the big ball. Er, BOWL...

QB Brad Johnson doing what he does best
He completed 18 passes totalling 215 yards that day.

CB Brian Kelly takes down Raiders RB Charlie Garner in one of his 5 solo tackles of the day.
He also had 3 assists and 1 pass defensed.

On third down, DE Simeon Rice puts QB Rich Gannon in his place, thereby forcing the Raiders to settle for a 3 point first score.
Simeon sacked Gannon twice during the Super Bowl, and he also made 5 tackles.

Martin "Automatica" Gramatica kicks a 31 yard field goal to tie up the game.
Martin went on to kick a 43 yarder in the 2nd quarter and 6 extra points after touchdowns.

DE Greg Spires helps Gannon take a seat.
He also made 3 solo tackles and defensed 2 passes during the game.

CB Ronde Barber clears the way for S Dexter Jackson.
Ronde made 2 solo and 2 assisted tackles during the Super Bowl, and Dexter was the first player in Super Bowl history to record 2 interceptions in the first half of the game. He was named Super Bowl MVP.

FB Mike "A-Train" Alstott and RB Michael Pittman rejoice after the first touchdown of the game.
The Bucs outrushed Oakland 150 yards to 19!

The team celebrates their second touchdown of the second quarter.

LB Nate Webster and S John Lynch show TE Doug Jolley why they call it the "Lynch Mob".
The NFL's top-ranked defense kept the Raiders scoreless the rest of the first half.

WR Joe Jurevicius caught 4 passes for a total gain of 78 yards.

WR Keyshawn Johnson congratulates WR Keenan McCardell on one of his 2 touchdowns of the day.
Keyshawn had 6 receptions for a total of 69 yards during the Super Bowl.

So-called "NFL MVP" Rich Gannon futilely chases CB Dwight Smith into the end zone during a 44 yard interception return.
Gannon threw 5 (that's FIVE, as in all of the fingers on one hand) interceptions during Super Bowl XXXVII, three of which resulted in Buccaneer touchdowns. That's a Super Bowl RECORD, folks!

Rich Gannon gets sacked, yet AGAIN, this time by DE Ellis Wyms.
Five must be Gannon's favorite number, because that's how many times he got sacked that day, too.

DT Warren Sapp put his money where his mouth is and sacked Gannon for a loss of 9 yards.
Warren made 2 tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass defensed, as well.

Mr. Derrick Brooks runs in a 44 yard interception return for a touchdown.
The NFL Defensive Player of the Year also had 2 solo tackles, 1 assist, and 1 pass defensed.

With 2 seconds left on the clock, CB Dwight Smith returns his second interception 50 yards for the last touchdown.
Dwight played an awesome game, with the addition of 4 solo tackles and 2 passes defensed.

The team thanks Coach Jon "Chucky" Gruden for leading them to victory.

At age 39, Chucky was the youngest head coach ever to win a Super Bowl.

(Just a little salute to the three teams who had the AUDACITY to beat us during regular season.
"Lee Flowers at home, how you doing?" HA! )
