Of Mice and Men. | |||||
One of the best things about anime is it’s so diverse that nearly every type of personality is present in the characters. One of the other highlights of anime is the level of realism the writers and seiyuu put into a character. There’s a lot more to Sailor Iron Mouse than some faceless villain who shows up to do evil now and again. She has hobbies, interests and obsessions, and this essay is about a topic that falls into all three categories: Men. She hasn’t had much luck with them in the past, so this essay is a little look into how she deals with men. (I wouldn’t recommend her tactics though…) If you watch all of the Mousie episodes you’ll notice in a good few of them that she appreciates beauty when she sees it; in both women and men. (Although I think it’s fair to say men are her favourite. ;)) When in her guise of Nezu-Producer that’s perfectly appropriate and expected- after all, she does pretend she’s talent scouting, reporting or interviewing in many episodes. However, put that element in to a situation where a good looking guy is involved, and Nezu is, uh… very inspired to say the least. It’s obvious what she goes for in a man- the exact opposite of herself. While she is small, slender and feminine, her ideal physical man is tall and well built, with a degree of machismo, although she does seem to like bishounen as well. A good (and hilarious) example of this is her second appearance in the show; she turns up at Usagi’s school, hoping to interview the captain of the American Football Team; Kayama Yuji, a massive man by anyone’s standards; he towers over Seiya, and if I remember right, Nezu only comes up to his elbow. She corners him at the end of a practice session, and in the guise of an interviewer, prepares to extract his Starseed. The interesting part is she could have just checked that no-one was around and blasted him with her bracelets- she didn’t need to gain his trust to get what she wanted- but despite her circumstances, Nezu always converses with her targets, which probably stems from her interests in the arts and talkative nature. When she converses with Yuji, it’s obvious she’s sexually attracted to him- much to the mortification of Yuji himself. Her approach is so forward it’s frankly plain scary- she showers him with compliments, grabs his arm and then gushes over how wonderful his muscles are. This frankly terrifies the poor guy, and tries to get away politely- Nezu nails him after that. Shortly after, Nezu spots Amanogawa Wataru in an old newspaper chronicling his discovery of his very own comet, Wataru Comet (Francois,) Noting his incredible good looks, uh… scientific discovery, Nezu plans to track him down and see for herself whether or not he has a true Starseed. However, she failed to notice the paper was dated 15 years ago and the result was a serious disappointment for Nezu when she reached the Amanogawa household. After a case of mistaken identity and much pouting, Nezu finally realized that the older, nerdier “obsolete” sensei that greeted her was in fact, the hunky young man in the paper. Nezu makes no attempt to hide her disappointment, and attacks him anyway, since there wasn’t enough time for more research that day. However, it’s only when Wataru’s glasses are knocked off his face as the newly-transformed Sailor Iron Mouse executes a mid-air kick thingy that she realizes he still is a good looking man, which of course changes everything. So she swoons over him for a bit and then transforms him into the ever-diverse Sailor Teacher. If these examples aren’t weird enough, what’s really strange is Mousie’s logic in all this. Like Mimete and Fish Eye before her, she seems to attack those she’s sexually attracted to, running the risk of their deaths. After all, she never sticks around for Eternal Sailor Moon’s Starlight Honeymoon Therapy Kiss, and as far as she knows, once a human has lost his or her Starseed, they transform into a Phage, a soulless parody monster of the person they once were. I don’t think any sane person would wish this on their idols, but it seems Sailormoon villains act differently. Of course, maybe rejections by her targets have made Mousie act this way, but she doesn’t show any signs of hurt or annoyance before these attacks, unlike Mimete or the Amazon Trio. She even attacks Seiya, whom she has had brushes with in the past, and seems to have quite a crush on- she admires his handsome face and refers to him as “Seiya-chan” suggesting closeness and affection. (Although a lot of Japanese people refer to their idols this way, they’re usually a lot more respectful in person.) Unfortunately though, it seems Mousie cares very little for the three men’s personalities- to her they’re pleasant to look at, but that doesn’t spare them for attack. To her they seem to be just eye-candy- she doesn’t fall in love like Fish-Eye or convince herself that her target is made for her like Mimete. However, she is evil after all, and is just doing this for her own approval from Galaxia- perhaps she truly believes good-looking people are the most likely candidates to have true Starseeds. (Although she doesn’t specifically target the beautiful.) She’s actually very close on this- after all, they don’t call them bishoujo senshi for nothing. I doubt that level of thinking went into it though; Mousie’s trademark is sloppy planning. So, brush away all the evil stuff, and the question remains, what would be best for her in a relationship? Villains like Nephrite and Fish Eye have redeemed themselves through love before, after all, so if such a situation had presented itself to Mousie I think her ideal man would be a little like this: The handsomer the better; although I could see her falling for someone for their personality. She’s an artistic soul though, and a little bit man-hungry, so good looks would help. He’d have to be reasonably masculine, but I can’t see Mousie falling for someone who’s all muscle and no brain- it’s obvious talent is very important to her, so someone intelligent or artistic would be perfect. And finally, he’d have to idolise her completely- she is a star, after all, and a little bit narcissistic with it. If she could find someone who didn’t mind being stalked, sexually harassed or drooled over, she’d be all set! Home |
