The episode begins with Usagi, Minako, and Makoto going up to Hino Shrine. They lament about short summers and too much summer homework. When they get there, they only find Chibiusa, from whom they hear Rei went off to an island to train.
Cut to an island out in the sea. Rei is saying her “Rin, pyo…” phrase on the oceanfront, but when the other Senshi, Chibiusa and the cats arrive she loses her concentration and is hit by a wave. They go to Rei’s villa on the beachfront. Rei tells everyone that she’s here for serious training, but Usagi lies and tells her that Chibiusa was lonely and wanted to play with her (after covering Chibiusa’s mouth so she couldn’t respond). Rei acknowledges, but then says that only Chibiusa has an excuse for being there. Luna and Artemis pull a swimsuit out of Rei’s suitcase, casting doubts on her “serious training”...
All of the girls go out to swim in the ocean. Rei warns of sharks. They swim in the ocean and play volleyball, do homework, fish, and build sandcastles. Chibiusa thinks she sees something tall looking at her from out in the ocean, but when she looks closer, it’s gone. Soon they eat lunch; Makoto makes fish. Chibiusa says she hates it, but when Rei protests that she’s never tried it, she throws a fit and goes out to the ocean in an innertube.
Eventually Chibiusa drifts far out into the ocean and the Senshi can’t find her at all. Cut back to Chibiusa, who is now in shark-infested waters. She becomes startled by one and falls into the ocean, sinking deeper and deeper. Suddenly, a sea creature picks her up and carries her to the surface.
Meanwhile, Makoto is driving a boat out on the sea, looking for Chibiusa. Rei is trying to sense her with her powers, but it’s not working and she’s feeling terrible for getting mad at her in the first place.
The sea creature is attempting to go to a volcanic island, but sharks are in hot pursuit and bite the creature’s fin. Chibiusa uses Luna-P as a propeller and blasts the sharks away. They make it into the island interior with Luna-P’s power, but the creature is hurt, so Chibiusa disinfects and bandages it. She sees a giant broken egg and deduces that the creature is a baby from that egg. Chibiusa decides to call the creature “Kirin-chan” (“giraffe” in Japanese) because of its long neck.
On the boat, the Senshi are getting worried that they can’t find Chibiusa. Luna and Artemis think they spot a massive monster in the water.
Chibiusa and Kirin are getting hungry, so Kirin brings back fish. Chibiusa decides to cook and eat the fish, which she finds is delicious.
Much later, it’s night-time; Chibiusa and Kirin are sleeping. Some rumbling wakes them up, and Kirin’s mother appears before them. It tries to take Kirin away, but neither Chibiusa nor Kirin want to. Before they can do anything, a giant quake occurs and a rockslide starts. Kirin’s mother jumps over them to protect them from the falling rocks, but they’re soon trapped.
The Senshi spot a volcano acting up, and Rei feels Chibiusa’s presence there. Everyone transforms. The boat speeds toward the volcano.
Meanwhile, Chibiusa is able to escape the rock pile, but Kirin and its mother are still trapped. She tries to free them, but more rocks get in the way. Suddenly, the volcano begins erupting! The lava heads directly for them.
Suddenly, the Sailor Senshi arrive! Mars uses Burning Mandala to try and stop the magma, and it splits into two paths. Jupiter uses Sparkling Wide Pressure to open up a crevice in the ground. The magma pours in. Venus uses Love-Me Chain to grab a huge rock. Nothing they’re doing seems to be working; the magma overflows the crevice, overtakes the rock, and overpowers Burning Mandala. Mercury uses Shine Aqua Illusion.
Chibiusa begs the Senshi to save Kirin and its mother. Moon checks the rock pile and sees them. The magma rushes ever closer, and with the other Senshi’s powers exhausted, Moon uses Moon Princess Halation to destroy the rocks and set Kirin and its mother free. They get away just in time; the lava reaches them just as they get out.
Later, the Senshi are detransformed and riding away on the boat. Chibiusa wakes up and wonders where Kirin is. Usagi explains that the Senshi came and saved them (remember, Chibiusa doesn’t learn of their identities until Episode 72); Kirin and its mother appear alongside the boat and then depart. Chibiusa is overjoyed but understands that Kirin has to leave.
Chibiusa says goodbye, then announces to Rei that she can eat fish now thanks to Kirin.
