The Monetary Systems of Eloria |
The coinage of the West has two distinct histories. The copper coins of the goblin tribes were in service long before the First Men invaded the land. The tribes bartered mostly but the copper coins acted as markers between goblin chiefs and eventually became symbolic of wealth, roughly 1 copper equals 1 goat. Those coins were rough pictographic geometrical oddities unique to each tribe. The second system was brought to this land by the First Men, who mostly traded in silver but also used gold. Gold is a rare enough metal for only the wealthy can trade with this metal, but silver and copper is the exchange of commerce for common folk. 100 Copper = 10 Silver = 1 Gold/Sovereign |
The Copper is the basic monetary unit, used to buy common items such as food, pins, nails and such forth. The universal copper is a small 1/2" diameter circular coin bearing no marks or impression. Sometimes a hole is stamped in the middle, for the North Men string their coin on leather thongs. Kyria and Vandein do have special 5 Copper coins that bear special marks- The Kyrian Copper bears a bunch of grapes and shafts of wheat. The Vandein Copper bears two crossed arrows. |
The Silver is the larger unit of money that is less common than copper but more available than gold. This is the middling currency, used to pay dock workers, tavern maids, mercenaries and anyone else who actually works for their money. There are several printed silver coins. The following are special coins denoted by nation. Stormwatch- bears the imprint of the Tower one side and a lightning bolt on the other. Kyria- bears a scythe and grain on one side and a horse on the other. Ankh- bears a likeness of the King Raihven Dragonknight on one side and a gryphon on the other. Dansig- bears the Angel on side and the Dragon on the other. The older coins depicted a war mask on side and a sword on the other. This coin is still in service. Nas Tirith- bears a battleaxe and sword crossed on one side and a bear on the other. Vandein- bears an eagle on one side and a likeness of the Elder Gods' Temple on the other. Hyborea- uses a panopoly of coinage, but there are many ancient Ankheri silvers floating around (Ankheri Eagle on one side and Malkor on the other). Zandier- bears a crescent moon on one side and a crown on the other. Kehman- bears a set of three pyramids on one side a crown on the other. Khand- bears a sea serpent one side and the current emperor on the other. A variety of coin is used with varying denominations and multiple commemorative coins (1, 5 and 10). Sarsa- no set coinage, uses all kinds. |
The Gold or Sovereign, is the largest unit of standard money in the West. There are a few kinds of gold pieces in use, but since the money is rare enough for the average man, most nations use the Ankhish Sovereign; not for lack of creativity, just because all the gold seems to go to Ankh anyway. The following are special gold coins denoted by nation. Ankh- the Ankhish sovereign bears the Crown of Malkor I on one side and the Citadel on the other. It is 1" in diameter and roughly 1/8" thick. These are perfectly round and the imprints are deep, standing up well to age. Dansig- less common than the sovereign is the Crown, used by the city state of Dansig since Ankheri fell for the first time and Arvandar I fled the might of Valyria. The coin is 5/8" in diameter and 1/6" thick. It bears the likeness of a crown on one side and a gryphon clutching arrows on the other. Vandein- the Mark is the third gold coin of the West and also is the smallest. It bears the imprint of an eagle clutching swords on one side and a sailing ship on the other. It measures 1/2" in daimeter and 1/6" thick. The Mark is worth the same as the soveriegn or crown due to a higher purity. |
Jewels- There are numerous jewels, stones and semi-precious materials in use in Eloria. These are used in jewelry, armor, weapons and luxuries of all kinds. The worth of gems in Eloria is as follows (-note, some of the following information originally appeared in Palldium RPG Book III, Adventures on the High Seas with the exception that the word gold was changed to silver). |
