Johnson Wildlife Habitat Projects

"I think that I will never see a poem lovely as a tree."

National Wildlife Federation certified site No. 45992

Plantings in a rural setting, 10.3 acres located directly off a state highway. Acreage has one year-round pond, one seasonal pond, several runoff creeks, and a portion of the old Ohio Canal running along the highway on the opposite side. (Ohio Canal portion owned by state and not part of the acutal property, but makes for a nice scenic view.) A 5+ year ongoing bluebird nesting box system has yielded an encouraging number of pairs of both bluebirds and tree swallows. Latest addition of habitat boxes is a bat box.

National Wildlife Federation certified site No. 67278

Plantings in an urban setting, a city lot with two story house and detached garage. Backyard is flowerbeds, bushes, berries, grapes, and concrete. Front yard contains lawn with flowerbeds with plants chosen for their attractiveness to butterflies and bees as well as their appearrance. The main focus for this location is butterfly and bee habitation and support. Some plantings for bird populations are in place, as are feeders and birdbath. Nesting boxes are not provided at this time; however, a mature tree on the lot has provided nesting opportunities for the birds while also providing a home for at least one squirrel. Chipmunks and deer have been observed.
