THE THIBAULT

Alice Thibault who married Alonzo Drouin came from St Cyrille de l' Islet.  The village is approximately six miles from the lovely river village of L'Islet-sur-Mer, sixty miles from Quebec City.  However, the same cannot be said about the village of St Cyrille.  Here is what the census taker James Oliver  had to say about it in 1851 " This parish is a new parish of five or six lines.  The land is hilly and rocky, with rocks being in majority.  However, there is a few good farms in the six and seventh line area.  Most of the farmers are very poor.  One only has to look at what is produce to realize this. "  Basically it had not change much by the time Alice was born, and it is still a land that does not produce.  Its sons and daughters had to leave in under to survived.

The ancestor of  Alice,  Francois Thibault came from the village of Ste Catherine de  La Flotte, Ile de Re, France.  Ile de Re is a small Island off the coast of LaRochelle.   Francois the son of Louis Thibault and Renee Gauthier was born in Ste Catherine.  He was baptized there on 28 June 1647.  He contracted with the ship owner Pierre Gaigneur to work in New France for a period of three years, for the salary of 75 pounds per year.  He settled with a carpenter named Robert Pare as helper.  See below for history of the parish, and some photographs of the church today (1999).

Once his contract completed Francois bought a piece of land close by the St Anne de Beaupre river, for 45 pounds.  Having settled down, he decided to marry and picked a "fille du Roi" who had recently arrived in Quebec, Elisabeth-Agnes  Lefebvre.  They married on 14 Oct 1670.

The couple did not stay on the coast of Beaupre very long and after the birth of their first child moved to the Seignerrie de Vincelotte, by Cap-Saint-Ignace.  (Not far from L'Islet sur Mer).  There they produce eleven more children.  In 1681, Francois had five "arpents" and four cows.    Francois died in 1724, and his widow survived him but by a few months.

Alice line goes as follow:

Francois (m) Elisabeth-Agnes Lefebvre at Beaupre on 14 Oct 1670.

There is a Thibault Forum provided by GenForum where information is exchanged on this Familiy.  I have not come accross a Web page on the Thibault yet, any info would be appreciated.

The Parish of Ste Catherine de La Flotte en Re

The church probably started as the private chapel of the "seigneurs de Mauleon", whose castle was a few hundred meters of the present day church.  The church was in existence as far as can be entertain from the early Xll century.  During the 100 hundred year war (1340-1453) the village of Ste Catherine was raided on several occasions and the church must have gone through severe changes.  During the religious war in France, (1560-1595) the Island of Re, passed alternately between Catholic and Protestant, creating more damages to the parish church.  The village was also taken by the English from Jul to Nov 1727.  It then had to go through the French revolution who took all of the furnitures and objets within the church.  The church was returned to the clergy in 1801.  ( this history is compliment of  the Collection A.E. St Martin de Re)

OTHER THIBAULT

Of course beside Francois Thibault there are other Branches of the Thibault name which came to North America and are now part of this great family.  There was a Guillaume Thibault who was the ancestors of a large family with, a Denis Thibault who did not have any living descendants.  The latest  that I came across was a Louis Thibault from an Acadian data base.  That data base can be acess by clicking on the following web address: http://genweb.net/~hebert/db8/  .  The site for the web page on  many other names and data base is the same as indicated on the line above, except omit "/db8/".
