Beowulf and Sara Pezzini: A Tale of Two Wielders

Summary:This is for all of us Witchblade freaks - I admit it, I'm so obsessed with the show that I actually used WB to write one of my English papers. We had to compare Beowulf, the character from Pagan lore, to a modern day hero. Guess who I picked? *lol* Hope you guys enjoy it!

Beowulf was a strong, compassionate warrior, always up to the challenge and confident, when it came down to him waltzing into battle. Just the same can be said for Sara Pezzini, the lead character in the comic and recently-axed TNT television series, Witchblade. Sara is strong-willed, an asset to the NYPD police force. When she comes into contact with her weapon, the Witchblade, her life turns around. She remains true to the police force and fights crime even harder, and without repose. She is courageous, valiant, and everything else that could be said about Beowulf. The two, in personality, are just alike.

The weapons of the two are strangely similar...yet very different. Sara wields an ancient weapon called the Witchblade. It deceives all who encounter it : when Sara is not in danger, it is a bracelet "A branch from the tree of good and evil," as it was referred to in the series. It is silver with a large red stone in the center that acts as an eye. When threatened, the bracelet turns into a full-fledged gauntlet: one that protects the length of her forearm, and from the fist emerges a sword. She has used this weapon to battle many a foe in both her current lifetime, and the many lifetimes before. Beowulf, uses ancient weapons as well, he goes through many swords as he is too strong to wield them properly. He breaks each of them as he strikes his foes in battle.

Beowulf is a warrior - complete with armor. At times, so is Sara Pezzini. In the final episode of the first season, Sara fought with fellow character (which the fans refer to as Ian v.2.0) Ian Nottingham in full body armor thanks to the duo's connections to the Witchblade. Sara defeats Ian, as Beowulf had slain the dragon; however, she was dealt a fatal blow just like Beowulf. BUT - the two fatal shots were received in two different places. Beowulf was bitten by the dragon on his neck; whereas, Sara was stabbed with a dagger by a dying Kenneth Irons, the character bent on taking the Witchblade from its wielder at all costs. Neither Beowulf or Sara died instantly. The only other difference is that Sara, having access to all powers of the Blade, is able to turn back time. Beowulf is not, and he dies. Sara, in turn, lives...thanks to the magic of the Witchblade.

Furthermore, is the story of the Witchblade. It is said to be of pagan descent, worn by the ancient Irish war goddess Cathain, among others. This story takes on Christian themes as it is passed down from wielder to wielder : Myrene - the Gorgon Amazon's Queen, to Artemesia I, to Cleopatra, to Cathain, to Joan of Arc, and now onto Sara Pezzini.

Beowulf's story also contains hints of both pagan and Christian themes, as the monks added in the Christian details as to make the story a little less blasphemous to the Christian followers. However, they forgot to remove the pagan elements, such as Beowulf consulting the "omens" before he left for Denmark, and then the story turns Christian as the monks told of Beowulf dropping to his knees to thank God for a safe journey.

From wielder to wielder, Beowulf and NYPD Detective Sara Pezzini are alike, not only in mind, but in weaponry and heart.
