Benjamin Schwartz was born around 1848 in Germany. He and wife Johanna (born 1847) had approx. 10 children, of whom the following 3 are known:
This family came to America in 1879 and first settled in Cleveland, OH by 1880. Naturalization and ship records have not yet been found. They are in Louisville, KY in 1900 (census records) where Benjamin is listed as a dry goods merchant, and Ysadore as a music teacher and violinist. Gertrude Helft is listed with them, along with her 2 children, Julius and Leonard.
Gertrude Schwartz Helft died in Indianapolis in 1920. She was buried in Louisville, KY with other Schwartz family. Her father, Benjamin died in 1917 and was also buried in Louisville, as was her mother Johanna. Benjamin remarried after Johanna died (she died about 1900/01). His second wife was Pauline Hirsch (1872-1932). They had a child named Muriel Schwartz. Muriel married Leonard Dubkin.
Benjamin Schwartz's father was Nathan Schwartz, and his mother was Minna Marks, all born in Germany.
