A one shot collaboration between former Face
Ronnie Lane (who was in deep financial straits) and The Who's Pete Townshend
1977's "Rough Mix" was
an undiscovered rock classic. Lane and Townshend had known each other for
years, previously collaborating on a song for Townshend's 1972 solo debut
"Who Came First". They also shared the same religious
inspiration in the form of guru Meher Baba. Showcasing an intriguing
blend of Lane's folk roots and Townshend's rock moves, the album displayed a
low-keyed, easy-going charm which was seldom apparent in either's catalogs
with The Faces or The Who. While neither man's singing was great, Lane's
"Annie" and Townshend's "My Baby Gives It Away" were
among the best things either had written. Elsewhere, Eric Clapton and Who
alumnus John Enwistle guested throughout. In spite of glowing reviews,
apparently too "English" for American audiences, the album proved
a modest success in the States, peaking at #45. (The album was originally
released with a gatefold sleeve.) "Rough Mix" track listing: 1.) My Baby Gives It Away (Pete Townsend) - 3:57 2.) Nowhere To Run (Ronnie Lane) - 3:12 3.)
