WAKG-FM 103.3 History

The 100,000-watt FM sister to Danville's WBTM,1330 AM, WBTM-FM signed on June 4th, 1968. The FCC assigned the FM frequency to Danville after discovering a computer error which left Danville as the largest city in America without an FM station. WBTM-FM simulcasted it's AM namesake at first and later aired an easy listening format. Danville's new FM wasn't its first; there was an earlier WBTM-FM that signed on in 1946 at 97.9 FM along with a WBTM-TV on channel 24, which began operations in February of 1954. The first WBTM-FM, along with the TV station, ceased broadcasting at the end of 1954. In 1972, WBTM-FM became known as WAKG and switched to a country music format. WAKG is a very community-minded station and their well-programmed country format and talented personalities have earned them several nominations from both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and the Country Music Association (CMA). You'll also hear lots of NASCAR and "Saturday Night Cool Classics", a classic country request show that pulls in callers from well beyond Danville. The station's "Tabernacle Time" with Brother Bob Barber, is the nation's longest running radio ministry, having been started by Barber's late father on WBTM April 1st, 1932. WAKG is owned by Piedmont Broadcasting, as they and sister station WBTM have been since their respective sign-ons.
