WCCE-FM 90.1 History

Campbell University signed on WCCE October 7, 1974 from studios and a transmitter atop the L.H. Campbell Hall of Science (named for the school's second president and the father of broadcaster A. Hartwell Campbell who founded WCKB in Dunn and WNCT-TV in Greenville. L.H.'s son, Tom, originally held the license for WRAZ, channel 50, in Raleigh). The station carried a mix of music along with some classic radio programs in its early days and aired a news and talk format in the early 1980s as "News/Talk 90". In 1991, the station began airing a broad-based easy listening format with the handle, "Light and Easy 90.1". In the spring of 2006, the easy listening format gave way to a Christian teaching and music format called, "The Word in Praise". In March 2007, it was disclosed that the university would cease operation of WCCE on May 31st. When that date rolled around, however, WCCE continued to broadcast--albeit totally automated awaiting purchase. In July of 2007, Radio Training Network, owner of His Radio WRTP, purchased WCCE for $350,000 and began simulcasting the programming of WRTP-FM 88.5 on WCCE. In early 2009, the new owners moved the station's transmitter from the Campbell University campus to a site in Cumberland County with 15,000 watts directional as a class "C-3" FM station.
