WHLF-FM 95.3 History

JLC Properties put this station on the air in early 1992 as WJLC, almost five years after an earlier South Boston station called WJLC, this one at 97.5 FM, was upgraded and it studios moved to Raleigh to become WQOK ). The new WJLC, like its predecessor, was the FM sister station and simulcast partner of WHLF, 1400 AM, a station which dated back to October of 1947, when the late James L. Cole, Jr. signed Halifax County's first radio station on the air. In early 1999, both the AM and FM stations began sharing their call letters as 95.3 became known as WHLF-FM, while the WJLC went to a then-co-owned FM station licensed to nearby Clarksville, until then known as WLCQ. The AM half of WHLF was sold to Willis Broadcasting of Norfolk and later had its license deleted after being off the air for several years. In February of 2004, WHLF-FM dropped the "-FM" suffix from their call sign. In April 2005, the Cole family sold WHLF to Lakes Media, LLC, a Raleigh-based company headed by Tom Birch which owns some other Southside Virginia radio properties. WHLF can best be heard in the far northern reaches of the market.
