WNCT-FM 107.9 History

As its call letters bear out, this was once the FM sister station of Greenville CBS affiliate, WNCT-TV 9. In 1963, Roy H. Park, then-owner of the ten-year-old channel 9, bought Greenville's oldest radio station, the 5,000-watt WGTC 1590. WGTC became WNCT, and WNCT-FM was added on December 22nd, 1963 at 107.7 FM(The AM side would later boost their power to 10,000 watts at 1070 on the dial, and in 2006, boost their daytime signal to 50,000 watts). For the next 30 years, WNCT was known for an easy listening/ beautiful music format that has become increasingly scarce on the radio today. The station later shifted to 107.9 and 100,000 watts of power. They used handles such as "Lite 108" and "Easy 107.9" before going oldies in 1994 as "Oldeis 107.9". After Park's death, the TV station and the radio stations parted corporate ways, but the call letters stayed the same. Both WNCT radio stations are now owned by Beasley Broadcasting Group.
