WKSL-FM 93.9 History

WKSL began as the FM half of two Burlington station that simultaneously signed on in early 1947. WFNS, at 1150 AM and WFNS-FM 104.3, were owned by the Burlington-Graham Broadcasting Company. Actor Ted Knight (1924-1986) from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and the movie "Caddyshack", is rumored to have worked here in the early 1950s. WFNS-FM, broadcasting with 2,800 watts, later moved to 93.9. The stations would later become known as WBAG and WBAG-FM. WBAG-FM was bought by the Chapel Hill-based Village Companies (now Vilcom) in 1984 and moved into the Raleigh-Durham market in August of that same year as Top 40/CHR WZZU "94Z", going up against Durham-based WDCG "G105", whose Chatham County radio tower sat next to their new tower on Jones Ferry Road. WZZU operated from studios in western Raleigh at 2500 Blue Ridge Road and the station pioneered the "morning zoo" format in this area. On March 1st, 1989, WZZU dropped the Top 40 format for new rock as "U93.9", later known as "Rock 93-9" before shifting to classic rock as "Classic Rock 93.9". WZZU was the first affiliate of the Charlotte-based nationally syndicated "John Boy and Billy Big Show". Ironically, Graham native John "John Boy" Isley got his start in radio at this very spot on the dial when 93.9 was Burlington-based WBAG-FM. In 1994, WZZU became a sister station of former competitor WDCG when the two stations were purchased by Prism Radio Partners. Following the purchase, WZZU relocated from Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh to WDCG's Durham studios at Park Forty Plaza, off Interstate 40. In 1996, AMFM Radio bought WZZU and WDCG, along with album rock WRDU and oldies WTRG, previously owned by Hicks, Muse, Tate and Fuerst. It was apparent that the classic rock format would cannibalize potential ratings for its two new sister stations, especially WRDU. On September 1,sup>st of that year, WZZU became soft rock-formatted WRSN "Sunny 93.9". "John Boy & Billy" were moved to WRDU and then-competitor Clear Channel picked up the WZZU call letters for a new classic hits format on their station at 103.9, previously known as smooth jazz WTCD "CD-103.9". After the sale and subsequent format change, WRSN moved to north Raleigh's Smoketree Tower along with WDCG, joining WRDU and WTRG. After a ten-year run, the soft adult contemporary "Sunny" format went away on December 26th, 2006 in favor of a rhythmic adult contemporary format called "93.9 Kiss FM" with the new call letters WKSL. In April of 2008, WKSL moved its city of license to Cary and relocated its antenna from the Chatham County Antenna Farm to the WLFL-TV tower in Apex, and began broadcasting in HD Radio on June 11th of that year.
