WVBZ-FM 100.3 History

The first incarnation of this station hit the airwaves in the late 1940s as WGBG, the FM side of Greensboro's 1400 WGBG (now WKEW), but apparently fell silent a few years later. In the late 1950s, it signed on in High Point as WNOS-FM, the sister station of WNOS 1600 AM. As WNOS-FM, the station simulcasted the popular and country music format and Tobacco Network News heard on the AM. In the 1980s, the station was easy listening as WGLD and later WOJY "Joy 100". They later repositioned as soft rock WWWB "B100 FM" in 1989. In 1994, they became classic rock WFXF "100.3 The Fox", only to switch to new country WHSL "Whistle 100" 13 months later. This format did really well for the station, but they were bought by Clear Channel and ended up going against WTQR, another country station owned by Clear Channel. On Jan 2nd, 2001, "Whistle" became WUBZ "100.3 The Buzzard". On Feb 28th, 2001, this call sign was modified to be WVBZ. "The Buzzard" has a construction permit to move their antenna to Cane Creek Mountain south of Burlington, much closer to the Triangle. In 2006, WVBZ activated their HD radio stream, with a secondary rock channel entitled, "Buzzard Basement", available on digital radios. In May 2009, the station went to an active rock format with the new handle "100.3 the Buzz".
